An American friend who knows I have an interest in international education, especially int he USA, has recently lost his job as his company has closed. He has a college degree and has worked in the medical field as an administrator more than anything else. He has decided, at the age of 40, to go back to university and he wants to study medical technology/imaging/neuroscience. His local university will accept him as a full-time student for a programme lasting 4 years leading to a degree in this field. Before he can attend university he has to go to (so the university stipulates)to his local community college and successfully complete some courses or other. His main concern is how to fund his way through what is now basically going to be a programme lasting 5 years. Are there any scholarships/bursaries available to people 40 plus in the USA? In the UK it is possible to get various grants - if you're lucky and present a good enough case - to take a new programme. My friend has been offered all sorts of bank and other repayable loans but was wondering where he starts to try to find non-refindable grnats, etc. Does anyone know?

Any help anyone can provide will be much appreciated and past on. Having a mortgage to still continue paying, a family, etc all this is going to be hard going.
