No nipples required: What does Playboy’s never-nude future hold? - Salon.com I guess when a guy says he reads it for the articles, he'll mean it. In a related story, subscriptions to National Geographic spike. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
I actually did like the articles, but you could never read it in public because you would be branded a perv by most women. I think it will be hard for Playboy to shed that image.
A lot of us did - and do. Playboy has long attracted some of the best writers by paying top dollar. It was (and I believe still is) a very competitive scene. The new policy is a survival move. At one time, circulation was 5 million plus. Now I'm told it's 1 million plus. I hope this change works. It just might....It would be odd, though, to see nothing but cigars, cars, watches etc. on the cover. J.
I guess I'm not surprised. There's so much free porn on the interwebs that I can't imagine anyone buying a Playboy either hard copy or digital. As for the articles, I don't really know about that. Are they really any better than in any other good magazine? Maybe, I just don't know. Maybe Playboy is going to shoot for an image like Cosmo or Vanity Fair. I'm guessing that's a limited market, hard to break into. Good luck to them. Why not?
All jokes aside, Playboy did/does have actual journalism and good articles. Who can forget Jimmy Carter's admission in a 1976 Playboy interview of committing "adultery in my heart"? Years ago, the Triple Crown for jazz musicians was winning the readers' polls for Downbeat, Metronome, and.....drum roll please.....Playboy magazines.
I read that the magazine itself has been a money loser for some time, but the company as a whole is profitable, so they keep publishing it because they consider it a marketing expense for the overall Playboy brand.
For some reason my first reaction to this news was "Does this mean Cigar Aficionado is now going all-nude?" I don't know why that would have been the case. But I'm amused by the thought.
I bet Procter & Gamble will be all over this with a full blown page ad of their "Tide Stain Remover" product. And of course, the ad must include a blue dress. :mischievous:
I wonder if people will still buy it for the pictures. I used to buy Playboy and a few other girlie mags for the sex advice columns, though I'll have to admit that I did look at the pics of all those pretty women too. (Yep, I really did "sin in my heart," like Jimmy Carter).
