'Car Talk' Co-Host Tom Magliozzi Dies At 77 : The Two-Way : NPR I love this show. I didn't listen very often, but when I did, it was always good for a laugh. Too early to tell if the show will continue with one host, new hosts, or if it will be put to rest. Sad to see him go. From all accounts among his personal acquaintances, he was an all-around great guy :sadwavey:
I thought for the last few years it's just been reruns? Or rather, "new" shows that were just repackaged portions of previous shows?
If that is the case, I'm, as usual, out of the loop. I was listening to it last week and I was under the impression that it was a brand new episode, which is partially why I was completely shocked to hear of Tom's death. If they were using reruns for a while, it would make more sense, in that he must not have been healthy enough to continue the show.
The car talk guys write a column in my local Saturday newspaper. I do not know if they are current or recycled. I will see what the paper says tomorrow or Saturday. I also enjoyed listening to them as I drove the freeway.
Both Cartalk guys retired from radio a couple of years ago. I once heard they had enough unused material to continue for a while, plus of course re-runs. Car Talk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Car Talk site says it'll continue as long as the public wants it and NPR is willing to broadcast it. I suspect (and hope) that, like Peanuts, it'll go on forever. I called in once. My interview was with a staff member. When it aired, it was very skillfully edited to sound as if I was talking to Tom and Ray.
Poking around Ye Olde Internetes, I found out that the show started in 1977 and ended in 2012, though I'm not sure if it ran on-and-off or straight through. Either way, if they kept archives of all the old episodes, we very well could be listening to reruns for the next few decades before they have to do re-reruns.
The column is being continued by Ray alone. I'm glad to see it but the humor doesn't work so well without the interplay between the brothers. It's true, you know...two people who know nothing about a subject can be more clueless together than one person alone. Remember the electric trailor brake discussion?
