CBS Marketplace today reports that the FTC has shut down an online high school diploma mill, with $11 million in sales, and about 50,000 customers. One wonders how many of these got into a legitimate college with their Jefferson High School Online or Enterprise High School Online diplomas? FTC shuts down high school diploma mill that took $11M - CBS News
Interesting. I wonder if they will have a go at the Sandford, Titan, Edward, Marwin, Lorenz, Stanley, Nation, Sunfield, Excel, Goldfield, Stranford, New Port Pacific, Woodfield and OLWA High Schools too.
I hope they do. Two companies were cited in the article as being shut down by the Feds. One had a Florida address and the other had addresses in St. Kitts and also Nogales AZ. Do any of the others mentioned have any operations or assets in the US? If not, I don't know how much can be done. I remember a U.S. law firm undertook a class action against the Belford guys in Pakistan and were successful in obtaining judgment for over $20 million. That was a couple or three years back. I wish the lawyers success in collecting that money for their clients -- but distance, borders etc. make such recoveries extremely difficult, even for determined, seasoned attorneys. And yes, I'd like to see these others shut down, but unless they have some US presence or assets, what can be done? Diplomatic channels? Johann
I checked out one of the schools mentioned. The only US presence I could find was a post-box in Illinois. Not much, but it'd be a start.... Johann
