Krugman's against it...so it probably will work.

Heh, when I saw an article that quoted him I thought the very same thing you did. All I need is to hear that Robert Reich thinks it's a bad idea and I'll be completely sold on it.

But seriously, one thing that concerns me is that Scots tend to be further to the left than Britons as a whole. If they're independent, I'd hate for them to left themselves out of the prosperity that might otherwise come from independence. Then again, Norway shows that when you have oil and a low population you can afford big government, so maybe that doesn't matter in this case.

The Catalonians are probably the next to hold a referendum, although policy makers in Madrid are raising up more roadblocks to the process than those in London did. I'm not sure a majority of Scots will vote Aye, but unless there's a dramatic change in public opinion there, the majority of Catalonians will vote to secede from Spain if given the chance.

It's interesting that this is all happening now. I remember some stories about people in the Basque region of France/Spain wanting to form their own country but that seemed much more contentious. I think there were some terrorist actions involved on the part of the Basques.

Kizmet: "I recently learned that the legal voting age in Scotland is 16."

John: And juries can return three possible verdicts: guilty, not guilty, and not proven (which is taken to mean, 'We know you did it, but there wasn't quite enough evidence.). I believe, also, that a simple majority is enough to convict -- but the sentence takes this into account: convicted on a 7-5 vote means less penalty than a 12-0.

Early results from four rural districts don't bode well for the pro-independence side.

Lets say that the Yes camp wins out and Scotland becomes an independent country. What would happen to the accredited universities? Schools such as Heriot-Watt EBS and so on. Will they retain their Royal Charter until a new form of accreditation takes place? :scratchchin:

Most of the off-shore oil wells in the UK are in Scottish waters, not to mention a NATO naval base. There is the question of EU membership, monetary issues, etc. Many implications. From what I've heard on the news, early voting results suggest that most people are voting against independence but just the fact that the issue has gotten this far indicates a large level of dissatisfaction with the political status quo.

Apparently, the majority of Scottish voters decided there is no aye in team....

But there is a "dumb" in "freedom".

Will Her Majesty still be Queen of Scotland? Or will they go find the Stuart claimant?
