I just found that you can "rent" movies from YouTube for $3 or "buy" them for $10. The quotation marks I placed on both "rent" and "buy" are because you end up with no physical media and no file to download to your hard drive, rather, paying the money gives your account permission to view the movie from your web browser when you are logged on.

It's really cool, in my opinion. I don't have cable TV and I have no desire to spend money on a Netflix subscription. This allows me to choose movies a la carte for those times that there is a certain movie I want to watch but can't find at the library or on RedBox. It can also be a great way to entertain impromptu guests!

So, this is my coolest thing ever of the week. Just like my other, similarly named threads, there might be an even cooler thing next week! Share your own if you will.

not bad! We generally use the free Hulu, and we are occasional Netflix subscribers. I like Redbox too. No cable/tv here either. We only use our computers for viewing.

I get free cable tv where I live. I usually leave it on as background noise, but I've been watching the 19 Kids and Counting marathon this weekend for some reason. At first, I thought Netflix was a waste of money, but I've found a lot of use for it. I watch a lot of the obscure, critically-acclaimed movies that are on there. I've enjoyed two original Netflix series: Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. I finally watched Breaking Bad because everyone raves about it. I thought it was terrible, but at least I got to finally watch it. I use Redbox for movies just released to DVD.

This is cool indeed. How do you rent the movies? I'm outside the US, therefore, renting new releases would be cool. We have Netflix here in Nicaragua, however, our content is different from Netflix US. We have Latin America Netflix. Cable here in Nicaragua is cheap, compared to US prices. The only thing that I miss is college football. Does anyone know if Is there a way to watch college football from outside the US? If there is, please do tell.

I don't have cable. I have a Roku LT device connected to the TV, and use it to display Netflix, which is most of what I watch, and occasionally something that is free for Amazon Prime members to watch, since I have that for free as a student.

I also have a Chromecast device for when I want to display a browser tab up on the TV. I can also find a YouTube video on my phone and pop it right up on the screen, which is occasionally useful.

If you don't have a smart tv, you can just buy a smart DVD player. My DVD player can connect to the internet and has apps for Netflix, Hulu, etc. It was around $89 and can play 3D movies, but you need a 3D tv for that. I opted to not get the more expensive DVD player with a fully functioning browser, but they are out there. Before that, I would hook my laptop to my tv with an HDMI cable. I haven't found a need for Roku, Apple TV, or similar devices.

I've never heard of a smart DVD player

We're running out of ways to distinguish DVD players, music players, game consoles, telephones, and personal computers from one another. Increasingly, they all do the exact same things, just with some features better represented than others, but even that aspect is changing drastically.

If I wanted to, I could connect my phone to a TV and play some fairly modern video games using it. I could connect to DegreeInfo using my brother's Playstation 3. Most of the time, I send texts and make phone calls from my personal computer. I can even watch movies on my ipod nano while I'm on break at work or challenge a real life Bulgarian chess master from an app on my tablet while running on a treadmill at the gym (and lose quite convincingly, I might add. I'm a better moderator than I am chess player :)).

I imagine a time, extremely soon, where everyone just carries their one electro-thing around that fits in your wallet and does absolutely everything. Who needs a DVD player when your electro-thing wirelessly sends movies to every screen in your house?

I hadn't, either -- but I have, of course, heard of Smartphones and Smart TVs.

I don't much like the idea of Smart Appliances of any sort. I get the feeling I could shell out a few bucks and buy something that's smarter than I am. That's an intimidating thought.

I don't ride horses for the same reason. They are wonderful animals, but again, I don't trust a creature that's probably more intelligent than I am. My schooling means bupkes to a horse, if he/she doesn't like me.

When people have to put blinders on you so you don't panic from seeing something unexpected, you can start worrying about horses being smarter than you. I don't think you'll have a problem there.

I've reread this post several times and I still have no idea what the heck you are talking about. :Flush:

Horses are so dumb that they spook easily, hence blinders. Thus, if Johann doesn't need them while he's walking around, he's smarter than horses. Or that's all I meant by the joke, which is now totally ruined. :tapedshut:

Fortunately, Steve, I read it before the explanation - I got it, and it was funny. And you got mine, so you and me -- we're good.
I don't need blinders - just bifocals. Never seen bifocals for horses. Guess they don't read much.

My DVD player can connect wirelessly to my smartphone. I'm sure that there are TVs out there that can do the same thing.
