Today, 06-11-14 at 9:00 PM there were two members and 231 guests on the board. The current record is 1377 on 11-20-13 at 2:03 AM. I wonder what was going on at 2AM to attract such numbers?

The current number of members is 25,602. The current number of banned members is approximately 2,100.

I wonder how many of those I have applied the ban hammer to.

2100 banned! That's almost 10% of all members. I wonder how many of those are trolls?

Hm, somehow I managed to post my comment to the wrong thread :dunno:

A quick look through the ModCP shows that the moderator most responsible for banning spammers in the history of DegreeInfo is probably airtorn. There was a time that I was catching up to Kizmet, but that was before life, life and life happened which slowed me down while airtorn went on a year-long tear, obliterating spam at a rate previously unseen in the history of mankind. They don't stand a chance with DegreeInfo's Batman waiting in the shadows to pounce on online evil doers.

The vast majority are spammers with a small percentage being regular members who were repeat offenders of the TOS.

Aah thanks. That is good to know.

Trolls? That would be a nice category.

Yeah - it would. Reminds me of Mimi Bobek and her troll collection - on the old Drew Carey show. She was always rearranging them around her computer.

Maybe the mods could make little figures of the banned -- and perhaps burn 'em all once a year -- at Winter Solstice.

PS - I loved that show!

I do have this custom image that I present to banned members whose posts haven't been deleted (usually for comedic purposes). You might remember seeing it before.

See, there's a toy troll in there! :)

Also, I was a huge fan of the show, too, and of Drew Carey's improv work. This here has to be one of the best, most catchy TV themes of all time.

Another thing I have in common with Johann, which makes me all the more awesome!

Do you/can you have any notion of how many separate individuals are represented in the 2,100? I recall Gus at DegreeDiscussion saying that the same person there had been banned under well over 100 different names.

Was that, perchance, the same person who is generally believed to use many, many pseudonyms on his own forum, thereby creating the illusion of traffic?

We are quickly approaching the first anniversary of our largest single episode of simultaneous attendance on DI. I think that with just a modest effort we can beat the record. FLASHMOB DEGREEINFO!!!

OK so it's been a while since I dusted off this thread so I thought I'd do something a bit different. I flipped open the spam file to see what in there at this point. You all know that we get lots of spam on the board. Most of it gets weeded out before you see it, that's due to our moderation queue. Some of it sneaks through though and usually we sweep it up and dump it in the trash. Here's a sampling of what you've missed recently:

1 announcement of upcoming boxing matches
    4 ads for apple watches
    1 six sigma ad
    1 Amity U ad
1 guy who has an interesting collection of kardashian tapes he'd like to sell
1 guy who wants to buy some books
1 ad for an Indian coaching site
1 guy who'd like to sell you some fake identification cards
1 guy who can't seem to decide if he wants to buy a wife or sell himself to a rich woman
1 ad in Korean that doesn't make a lot of sense
I ad for an essay writing service
    1 ad for bootleg Viagra

See what you're missing? Such fun!

"Today's Birthdays" jumped out at me this morning because it's full of spammer fake identities that were all born (and died) on this date one year ago. Despite being banned they continue to appear on the Birthday list. Happy Birthday and RIP spammers.

Every once in a while, when doing some research on some peripherally related topic, google sends me back to degreeinfo. It makes me smile to think that we've become such a good resource. With that said, perhaps it's not surprising that we are approaching some big milestones:

    Almost to 50,000 threads
Almost to half a million posts
    Almost to 30,000 members

I heard that Ted's having a big party each time we hit one. Is that right Ted?:eek1:

Wow that is incredible! And I'm willing to bet that out of those 500k posts, half of them were from Rich Douglas and Neuhaus! Just kidding! Well maybe not.

I'm totally coming to Ted's party. I'll bring wine.

OK, so it's 6 months later and I thought I'd update you all on all the silly things that you don't care about (it's good I only do it occasionally).
At 1:52 pm on this date we had 6 members and 239 lurkers on the site. We have 29,241 members and we're carrying 474,398 posts inside 48,172 threads. That's good work but we're going to have to pick it up a bit if we want to hit our round number targets in a reasonable timeframe. I also wanted to tell you a bit about the spam folder as the Mods (especially airtorn) has been packing it full of all sorts of interesting stuff. We have
    education franchising opportunities in India
    MBA tutoring opportunities
people who will be happy to do your school assignments for you
lots of people who are having problems with their computers
    project management opportunities
lots of stuff from Chennai. They seem particularly into interior decorating.
a whole range of prescription medication services
    lots of credit card offers
one guy who's really, really, really into locksmithing
a woman with carpal tunnel who wants to tell you about her MD
a woman posting exerpts of her gothic novel (sort of a Moby Dick on Viagra thing)
a bunch of posts in a wide variety of non-English languages. If you translate them they are just "Nigerian Prince" thingies.
my favorite though are the straight forward sales pitches for fake documents. One in particular (in Dutch) was very appealing. "Just tell us what you want and we'll do it. Passports? Drivers licenses? No problem! Certificates, diplomas, that's easy! I like the honest approach.
So that's what you've been missing. Keep those posts coming and let's hit those milestones!:grouphug:
