There is a lot of garbage on YouTube, for sure, but there is also a lot of treasure to be found! Some of my favorite brain-food channels are

Numberphile - YouTube - Everything to do with numbers! Not just the formulae and algorithms, but the paradoxes and the yet unsolved mysteries of mathematics.

MinutePhysics - YouTube - Short, clever, cute clips on physics.

Vsauce - YouTube - Interesting questions and interesting answers. It's hard to really classify what this show is about, since it covers so many topics, but it is mostly dealing with questions of science and touches somewhat on philosophy and history. It's very well researched and the host clearly enjoys what he does.

Kevin deLaplante - YouTube - Some really compelling videos on introductory philosophical topics, but where it really shines is in how it applies matters of logic and critical thinking to matters of mathematics and psychology.

Of course, there are loads out there and, if you feel so inclined, I would love to see your favorites, too!

PS. Please help me make this the first thread of mine in several months that hasn't completely bombed due to lack of interest. :icon16:

I love the ASAP Science channel. I subscribed and it appears on my Facebook, which is really great because I wouldn't remember to check otherwise. These are little 2-5 minute science topics on random or complex things that are explained perfectly for the non-sciency types. (me)
    AsapSCIENCE - YouTube

I've had a lot of lectures from Youtube University - various good schools. A while ago, I went through 47 lectures on Bible Greek from the Nashville School of Preaching. Mercer U. had a presentation on Southern Poets that I enjoyed. I also like the BBC Documentaries. They have series on various aspects of British and European history - I've been through the complete series of Britain BC, Britain AD, the Vikings, History of Scotland, The Celtic peoples...

YouTube is absolutely the best for anything musical you want to learn. Any instrument, any style. I have all kinds of guitar stuff - fingerpicking, jazz, blues, etc. One of the best finds - lectures on T-Bone Walker's guitar style by Prof. Mike Williams of Berklee. Fabulous musician (T-Bone) fabulous teacher (Mike) fabulous school (Berklee).

If it's math or science you want - well, there are several thousand Khan Academy videos.

You can find pretty well anything you want on YouTube. Case in point -- I play concertina and like blues. This isn't particularly intellectual, but it's a great concertina & voice performance of Elmore James' "Dust My Broom."

Musik Böhmer and his Concertina from Hell - Dust my Broom - YouTube

Yeah - it is good. My second-youngest grandson (who is 10 now) introduced me to VSauce a couple of years ago, IIRC. He learns a lot -- from everywhere!

One of my favourites - how could I forget Gresham College?

    From the web-page:

"Gresham College has provided free public talks within the City of London for over 400 years. Founded in 1597, Gresham College is London’s oldest Higher Education Institution."

YouTube is a perfect platform for Gresham lectures. Too bad it wasn't there in 1597! There are lectures on many subjects available and I've had particularly good luck with psych and astronomy topics.

Just what I was looking for! I'm facinated by astronomy, both its grandeur and that it is highly interrelated with my favorite branch of science, physics, which helps to reveal many of the deeper mysteries of our awesome universe. Tanks!!
