This is an older article (November, 2001), but I don't think it has been discussed here before. It discusses some of the implications homeschooling has for managers seeking to hire quality workers.

Fascinating article. I have studied homschooling and homeschooling research for many years and have found that, apart from a few isolated cases, there is no evidence to support the opinion that home schooled children suffer socially, compared to their public or private school educated peers. Home schoolers do above average on standardized tests and tend to be very successfull in postsecondary education.

The opinions of the almighty NEA notwithstanding, not all "socialization" found in today's public schools is positive for students. While certainly not for everyone, home schooling provides a viable alternative for many learners.

My experience with homeschoolers (myself included) confirms Anthony's description more than it does that of the NEA.

Folks who cite socialization as a primary aspect of schooling should ask themselves why it's so primary--do they really believe that traditional schooling provides the only opportunity in the world for kids to develop as human beings? If so, isn't the problem a little bigger than homeschooling? My understanding is that compulsory education is supposed to help you achieve your goals--not tell you what your goals are supposed to be.

    Cheers,
