Here we have a case of analogy run amok. A few mere months ago, I heard a sports radio host speaking of the "Mount Rushmore" of a particular team. Within weeks, I heard the phrase used for several more teams, then professions, then fields of study, then other countries, then television shows, then for just about every human institution that has ever existed.

    The Mount rushmore of ufology

    :eek5:

If you search for the phrase "the mount rushmore of" in Google, you find that the vast majority of hits are from this very year, meaning that it was not just some sort of coincidence that I have been hearing this phrase a lot lately. It means someone said it about something, somewhere and it just caught on and is now the hot-button analogy of 2014. It even showed up as part of a joke during the White House Correspondents Dinner. IT'S EVERYWHERE!!!!

So... has anyone else noticed this? Has this kind of analogy contagion ever happened before, in your recollection? And who would you put on the DegreeInfo Mount Rushmore? :laugh2:

I would put Rushmore University as the Mount Rushmore of things here that refer to Mount Rushmore.
