I'm planning on buying a kayak this spring and I'm looking for some feedback from those more experienced than me in this area. I plan on using it primarily on lakes and quiet rivers. So...sit on vs. sit in? Size? Brand? Price? Used vs. new, etc.
    All sugestions welcome. Thanks.

I'm not an expert, just an occasional paddler.

    1. Buy cheap. Used, new, as long as it is inexpensive so you can try out and see if this is really for you. You might even consider renting. Places like WalMart, Sports Authority and Academy Sports often have low end models starting around $200. You can then either keep the cheap model as a spare or probably get most of your money back selling it to some other beginner. If its cheap you won't feel as bad gouging it on rocks.

    2. Lighter is better. After a day, or even a couple of hours, of paddling, lifting 23 pounds onto the roof of my car is much easier than lifting 45 pounds. However, lighter is more expensive, often much more.

    3. As you plan on using it primarily on calm water, I would suggest considering a canoe. The smaller models have the sit rather than kneel option, but as they are open and usually have adequate capacity, carrying a passenger is an option. One can always get a spray skirt for the kayak feel.
