Unisa vice-principal gets the boot. Unisa has fired Prof. Simon Maimela. Maimela was a former acting Vice-Chancellor, and was the leading Unisa opponent of the current Council chaired by McCaps Motimele. Although he ultimately held the title of "Vice Principal: Tuition," he is a well-regarded academic and reflected the faculty's discomfort with the current Unisa leadership. Maimela was a professor in the theology department. Although it's not my field, I understand that he's well-recognized in South African academic circles, and is the editor of several books including "Initiation into Theology: The Rich Variety of Theology and Hermeneutics."
A few more articles about the Maimela sacking: Unisa's Maimela Was Sacked for Inquiring Into Pityana's Salary. Pityana is the current Vice-Chancellor (took over from Maimela, who was acting Vice-Chancellor). Maimela was looking into whether Pityana collected two salaries last year. 'Gatvol' academics boycott Unisa elections. The word "gatvol" literally means "hole full." The best translation into English might be "pissed off." Not typically used in newspaper headlines.
