Students in the U.S. Navy Study General Biology While at Sea. This is part of the "snapshots" series published in the Chronicle. It's about a DL course in biology offered by Citrus College (a community college in CA) to sailors in U.S. Navy as part of the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education. The wrinkle here is that sailors at sea cannot go "online" for courses, and hence a CD-ROM and textbook combination is employed.
I wonder if they get to dissect a virtual frog. I took Econ from GWU through the same program about 8 years ago on a sub. I watched VHS tapes after watch, read the textbook while rigged for deep submergence and took fill-in-the-bubble mid-term and final exams. Not an enjoyable experience but it was 3 credits down ...
