From a local rescue or pound. They have puppies or adult dogs. The beauty of adopting an adult dog is 90% of the time they are already house trained and passed the crazy puppy stage. You will be doing something nice while saving a life.

Just something to keep in mind!

I grabbed my dog off the street. My city has over 100,000 stray animals.

Our pound rescue cat that we got five years ago has to be the best cat ever. She was an owner turn-in and I am shocked daily that somebody gave her up.

Our other cat came to us as a free kitten from a neighbor who refused to get the family cat spayed.

Good thread! I have a wonderful pit bull mix from the local shelter. Best dog ever. We adopted him when he was 3 months old, so we went through all the fun and not so fun puppy stages. Don't buy dogs (or cats) when there are so many great animals waiting for a good home!

We adopted 2 dos from the pound 2 years ago. Whiskey who is old (nobody knows) and Tango who is less old. Whiskey had been abused and his back had been broken in two places, plus about half his teeth were rotten and had to be pulled out.

When I travel my wife puts them at day care since she works long hours. This Halloween, without our consent, they dressed Whiskey as a banana.

I agree - there are often "pet rescue" groups you can also join - on Yahoo for example. ;)
