For the Jewish populace living in Europe, Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) was the beginning of unimaginable horror. Current German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, stated just today, "I feel deep shame that there is not a single Jewish building in Germany without police protection because we still have to worry about anti-Semitic attacks." Sad indeed!
Tell you what bothers me even more than Chancellor Merkel's comment...during our High Holiday services this year, as in every other year, we employ armed, uniformed guards at our Reform Temple. I could be mistaken but somehow I doubt that the local Cathederal has armed guards patrolling during Easter Midnight Mass.
