The popular recent thread entitled Un-Accreditited List Updated reminds me of an interesting episode from the past. In the late 1960's, when we were making fun of the honorary degree world with our "Millard Fillmore Institute," we were restricting our "honorary and meretricious" awards to really silly stuff, like Doctor of Golfing Expertise and Doctor of Astrology. Then we got a request from someone for a degree with the title as per the title of this post. We replied, "No, we're no going to do anything that is a real degree title." "Read more carefully," came the reply. Oh. So, for a very short while, we printed up Doctor of Philososophy Doctor of Mathematatics Doctor of Anthropolology and the like. It never occurred to us to say, "Fully Accreditited" or we might have done that too. Then we decided that if we had been fooled, so well might others, so we stopped. The Fillmore Institute, as best we can recall, "awarded" its last degree in 1972.
