I live just far enough away from the nearest movie theatre that I don't go much. I might be in a position to go this weekend though and I'm wondering, what should I see? Any recommendations? Criteria . . .
    I like sci-fi.
    I hate horror.
I like comedies but find that most comedies these days are made for 14 year old boys.
I don't mind action movies but prefer it when there's actually some decent acting.
I don't mind crying but don't kill bambi or ol' yeller...or any kids.
    Something intelligent
    Something that's NOT a remake
    or a spin-off
or a sequel or a prequel

I enjoyed Hot Fuzz a few nights ago. Comedy but it will challenge your UK English language skills.

And a state that waives the bar exam if you say "pretty please?"

I hope you find what you are looking for, but I'm cynical about contemporary popular movies. Everything you like is exactly what major studios are afraid to make and (nearly) every blockbuster of the last 5 years fits into the "Kizmet hates" category. [/killjoyfulness]

I want to see The Butler, but I'll wait for it to come out on DVD. I rarely go to the movies, so I can't give any recommendations for films that are currently playing. I mostly watch critically-acclaimed films. It's not a perfect system, but it weeds out most of the junk and brings my attention to lesser-known films.

White House Down. Intelligent dialog, clever plot, spectacular special effects. Unusual results on RottenTomatoes.com -- about 2/3 of reviewers loved it, 1/3 hated it, almost no one in between.

The last movie I saw was Wolverine, and it was really good. It's a sequel, though.

I just got back from The World's End - sci-fi and funny.
