Attrition rates in online programs

    There's been discussions as to differences in drop rates for on-ground and on-line schools. I agree with part of the article that it may not be a question of academic failure that students drop, bu t maybe it is the 'right thing to do.' I also agree it may be difficult for some people- at some times- to juggle all the requirements of adult life. Even without kids, working in Silicon Valley can take up a lot of time (when I was gainfully employed).

    However, there is one area that the article touches on, but doesn't really explore deep enough. Dl can be isolating. Even the most motivated person may not be able to handle it, especially if they prefer a socialized environment.

    Another thing that may contribute to the drop rate is simple expectations. I've spoken with some people thinking that it will be a breeze to sit at home in their fuzzy bunny slippers and study. What they find is the distance courses are a lot more work than they realized.

    DL is a great delivery method, but it ain't for everyone (yeah, yeah- I know 'ain't' ain't a word. I just feel like letting loose tonite).
