Hello! I go to an on-campus liberal arts school. I am currently majoring in Education P-5 and Special Education. I am 89 credits in, becuase I transferred to the university from a community college so I am only a year into my major courses. I live in Kentucky, and as of now, the state is going through a major education reform, and as of now I have 2 years left before my degree, and I am beginning to hate the things that I am being taught in my upper level education classes. It is summer break, and I DREAD going back to these classes. I Love my special education classes, and i love my psychology classes. I am struggling with the idea of switching my major to psychology. I would like to become a school psychologist or a substance abuse councilor. I need some opinions on whether an undergrad bachelors in psychology would help to get me to either of these places. I realize I must have a masters degree, and I am fully prepared for that, but I am not sure whether or not a bachelors in psychology would get me there. And if I am not able to acheive that masters (I have three kids at home) what could I do with just a bachelors in Psychology?

OK, lots of questions built into this post. First, I'm sorry it's not working out. I'm not sure what could be SOOO bad about your education courses that you're willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater but hey, that's none of my business.

Masters programs in counseling are relatively competitive so the problem is not whether a BA in Psych qualifies you, the problem is your GPA and whether you have any experiences (you know, resume stuff) that will make it look like you're actually suited to this field. I've been told that there are lots of people who THINK they want to be counselors right up until they find out the truth about the job. Then they become disillusioned and start trying to pay back their student loans based on a grocery store cashiers salary. So, get excellent grades and you'll get into a Masters program (make sure it will leave you eligible for licensure). Good luck.
