..in a traditional state university? In the business world we create SBUs (Strategic Business Units) when we want to kick-start an opportunity or position part of the organization to operate substantially differently form the core business for some strategic reason. Is this term used in state schools/bis universities or is there some other common catch phrase or nomenclature in traditional ed..?

SBU. Don't imagine that higher ed is any different than any other business.

Okay thanks maybe there isn't term for it, I would be surprised that large state funded higher ed institutions call their units "business" but okay..

I have seen the language Autonomous Business Unit (ABU) used occasionally; however, Strategic Business Unit (SBU) is in my experience the far more common terminology used.

What about combining terms? Maybe "Strategic Study Centre for..." or "Strategic Research Institute for... ," depending on the purpose. SSC or SRI. Don't use "Strategic Training and Development," though. STD isn't a great abbreviation!

Main requirements: Should sound "strategic" and also like it cost a ton of money to set up, even if it's in a broom closet. That way, a high fee for its use is justified.

Okay I'm going to pitch it as a "Strategic Education Department". When I google it today in quotes I get 2 links. If everything goes through we'll google it again in 6 months and see how clever I am, or not..

Attempting to test Johann's theory, MC grabbed his medical dictionary and ran out the door as fast as he could. Frantically, he approached a child appearing to be no older than 3 years old, who was accompanied by his father. The following conversation ensued:

MC: Do you know what an STD is?

    MC's Mother: You're alive!!

    MC: Mom?!

Slowly, MC became aware of his surroundings. He was in a hospital bed, having survived a severe beating at the hands of a crazed professional cage fighter whom he had never met before. The last thing he could remember was asking the stranger's son a survey question in the name of science.

Using the word business isn't the same as renaming Ralphie to Sr. Sales Executive or change the football team name to the "Colorado Revenue Generators"..
