This article (and book) makes you think about the utility of a doctorate, social norms and expectations, and what not. Very interesting.
I've heard good things about that book before. Also, on the general concept, I had a friend in high school who was a real go-getter, mostly AP courses and with a high GPA. He took auto mechanics as an elective as a senior and said he was surprised to find that it was the most intellectually stimulating class he took all year.
Then there was the man who earned a Ph.D. and became an expert in non-traditional education. Some of his work appears on the home page of this forum. Dr. Steve Levicoff chose to become a long-distance truckdriver and has pursued that important calling for quite a few years, now. I much enjoyed his cross-country reviews of musical theatre - and the occasional flareups from his flamethrower when some hapless "wazoo"[/I] showed his/her ineptitude in a DL forum. Doggone, I miss him! Thanks for posting this.. I read the NY Times article and must say he makes a lot of sense... especially for those of us who are at a crossroads in their career.
