I liked most things about the 1980's (music, fashions), but this development proves that some things are best left in the past. :D

I admit that I get a bit sad when I remember the '80s and the fun I had back then. When I see old vidoes of Cyndi Lauper or A-HA or the Outfield, it can bring tears to my eyes...

But when I think of the Yugo, I break out in a cold sweat. I almost bought one around 1990. But I see that I get another chance. Now I can live out the fantasy....

    thanks for sharing,

    Long live the 80's

I have over 2 gigs worth of 80's MP3's on my hard drive - so I too remember the pleasures of yesteryear.

I almost bought a Yugo, too. I wonder if I could fit my three children in one now...:D

Though I thankfully never bought the Yugo, I did get a Mustang (you thought I was going to say Gremlin, didn't you :p ). As much as I miss the 'stang, I am pretty sure it would make for long family trips with two kids under 5. Oh well, so much for our youth...

I'm fortunate to still own the ultimate car of my youth. When I got out of the Army in 1986, I bought a 1987 Buick Grand National, brand-new and ordered by me. It has 22,000 original miles, and is now in storage in Maine (so my wife forgets about it).

Speaking of vehicles for kids, I just bought my wife a new 2002 Honda Odyssey mini-van (we have 6 month old twins), and I can honestly say that it lives up to the hype. Great vehicle.

When Click and Clack chose the Yugo as the worst car of the 20th century, they said its one redeeming feature was the heated rear window -- so you could keep your hands warm while you were pushing it.

    Bruce,
We're actually in the market for a vehicle...I'll have to check out the Honda Odyssey mini-van...

Thanks for the tip! If it's leggy, my 13-11-9 combo will be grateful.
    :D

    Kind regards,

I can't recommend it enough. You're going to pay MSRP and you'll probably have to wait, but it's worth it. It's the only mini-van to earn a quadruple 5-star safety rating, and it has so many neat and unique features that it must have the GM/Ford/Chrysler/Toyota engineers screaming "why didn't we think of that"?!?

I once owned one of Bricklin's SV-1's (1974) back in the late eighties. It was white (fiberglass) and had a saddle leather interior, maple dash and wool carpeting. The gull-wing doors were a bit of a problem when opening in the mall parking lot, but overall, a gutsy car (Chevrolet engine, Olds rear and drivetrain).

As far as the 80's are concerned, we had disco balls, Billy Joel, Boone's Farm, muscle cars, Cabbage Patch Dolls, Walkman's, Izod shirts and personal computers not operating in DOS.

Great movies like: Stripes (Bill Murray), dance movies (Flashdance and Dirty Dancing) and of course, The Blues Brothers. Television had it's hit shows: Family Fued, Knight Rider (now Baywatch), Dukes of Hazzard, MASH and Dallas. Ahhhhhhh, the memories.:(

Oh the memories are right...my first car was a 1970 Ford Maverick, primered with black-n-white checkerboard interior - dubbed the Primermobile by my buds. That car was a piece of junk (ala one of Adam Sandler's more, ahem, truthful songs...). But at the time, I could have cared less...it got me from A to B...and that's all that mattered.

Man, I miss that car... ;)

In 1970, my father bought a brand new, classic, baby blue VW Bug. He bought the cheapest model available, which means it had no air conditioning and only came with an AM radio. The interior was either plastic or metal.

In 1976, this hand-me-down car was given to me. My first car! Can you believe that they used to make cars with no air conditioning?

It was a wonderful car. Boy, those were the days....

Well my wife's first car was a white 1974 Maverick. We had it until just about 4 years ago. I drove it while I was in college. I think it got about 10 gallons to the mile :D

My first car was a 1979 Dodge pickup - thats right the UGLY ones. It was puke yellow... It had a three speed in the tree, and could hit 65 going down a steep hill with a tail wind from heaven. It didn't get quite as good mileage as the Maverick.

What I wouldn't give to trade in the 98 Windstar and the 95 Neon for that old truck...
