    Anyone here done this?

    Square Foot Gardening

I'm attempting it. I just build the beds and planted this weekend. Hopefully in about 2 months we'll have something!

I've -oh, maybe 40-odd years of gardening experience and a course or two on the subject. I think raised-bed gardening of all sorts is very cool. I have a couple of books on the square-foot method and when I have a garden again (and I will) I'll be trying it.

While taking Spanish some years ago, I got to reading about Mexican chinampas - raised-bed gardens that started with the Aztecs, 1150-1350 C.E. or thereabouts. You might find these articles interesting:

    I wish all good gardening!

    We read this book.
But what we did a year ago was build a D shaped bed about 18" high x 5' long using artificial stone blocks from Home Depot. Installed to irrigation water sprays. 6'' peat followed by 1' garden soil. We grew tomatoes, zuccini, kale, carrots, and stevia. Great success and hope for the same this year now the snow melted a few days ago.
Vegees right of the garden taste great.

I really liked the book "Sailing the Farm," which Ten Speed published many years ago; still in print. The author grew all his own vegetables on the deck of his small sailboat as he sailed around the world.

That's an extremely cool concept. Could have saved early sailors from scurvy, too, if only they'd tried it. One salt-water wave washing across the deck could wipe out a crop, though...

Ten Speed Press --what memories! When I first saw the Ten Speed ads, many many years ago, I envisioned Dr. John Bear as possibly a Native American, who rode a bicycle around the California Desert, checking out newly sprung-up non-traditional schools.

...Well, the reality is an interesting enough story, anyway - but I've always kind of liked my illusion!
