Mmmmm....I could go for some Apple Pi or maybe even a blueberry but I like my crust to have a little more cinnamon than is usual. My Mom likes lemon pi but that gets old when she brings one to every family dinner. At least she can still cook!

    Happy Birthday Dr. Bear!

    Happy Birthday, John.

You are the reason for my interest in distance education, which began in the early 90's after reading a copy of Bear's Guide (I don't remember if it was a sole edition [Bear's] or one of the editions with your daughter [Bears']). From there, I read "Name It Frame It," which led to the old AED, then DegreeInfo, then DegreeDiscussion, et al. It's amazing how the field has expanded over the past twenty years.

Happy Birthday Dr. Bear. I started reading your books back in the 1980's. The one thing that always strikes me is how accessible you are. Whenever I've had a question you've responded. Your legacy is your work and the multiple DL students and grads. Have a great B-Day.

My first was the 6th edition, which I read in 1980. Ended up doing my Ph.D. on that subject. Go figure.

My first was the 9th edition (1985), picked up from City University Library's discard pile in 1992. Found out about Cal State D'Hills' HUX program and the Union Institue's PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences. Haven't gotten around to earnin g said degrees yet.

Thank you, one and all. It is really appreciated. The birthday was celebrated under the Aurora Borealis, about an hour's drive north of Fairbanks. 16 below zero, and truly spectacular.

Wow. I once saw a huge static discharge from a sweater left in the dryer too long, but somehow I suspect it wasn't as cool.

On another note, I want to thank John publicly for being a kind and helpful mentor to me. As longtime readers know, I met John by asking him (by mail, in a letter written on a typewriter!) to serve on my committee at Union for my Ph.D., which he graciously did. I left the Union program after a few years for personal reasons. Several years later, John asked Union's president, Judith Sturnick, if they would waive the time-in-program limit and re-admit me--I had given up hope of finishing. The Union, to their credit, jumped at his suggestion and I was able to finish my program about a year later. It taught me a lot about the value of letting go and seeing what others can do.

The Ph.D. changed my life forever. And so did you, John. Thank you.

Were you driving on the ice roads?

Ted: "Were you driving on the ice roads?"

Well, the famous Ice Road (as in "Ice Road Truckers") heads north from Yellowknife, NWT. (We were there 3 years ago in winter -- one can see, but not actually drive on the Ice Road unless you are driving a 26 or 34-wheeler. The northern lights were turned off that week, hence the attempt in Fairbanks.) Fairbanks: icy, but manageable with snow tires on the rental car.
