Just a reminder

The Mayan calendar tells us that we're all going to die in a few weeks. I've left my full-time job in order to attempt to save the world. I may not be as present on this board as in the past because I'll be tracking down clues, etc. If you wake up on 12-22-12 and discover that the world is essentially the same as when you went to sleep then you can offer your congratulations/appreciation in a sincere but subtle manner.

I have been preparing for this for the last 3 years. Soon I will head to my fortified bunker in the Great Smoky Mountains that has been selected and outfitted to be fully self sufficient for 7 years. If the world doesn't end ... for god's sake ... someone please come get me. I can be found near 35.300766,-83.668284. Watch for booby traps. When you reach the sign that says "shout the password or die" remember to yell "Zippy Dippy Kabob Yo Ho Ho" at the top of your lungs. Then lay flat on the ground face down for 25 minutes until I get there.

 

Didn't the Mayan prophets also predict Y2K? :smile:

They did not predict their own demise.

 

They are not extinct, they are still around, to the tune of 7 million to be exact.

They flourished for thousands of years and had a population almost equal to that of Los Angeles County with thousands of people per square mile in cities and hundreds per square mile in rural type areas. Their demise is one of the more puzzling phenomenon within the scientific community.

So what happened to their civilization...famine? self exile? E.T.'s?

Come to Chiapas Ted and you'll hear plenty of Mayan. If you train your ear it's easy to tell the difference.

I wish I had come better prepared. I could use some astronomy lessons and another pair of boots. The weather is nice however and we have some potential contacts for this week that could put us on the right path. Best of luck to us all.

Correct, mayan is but one of many native languages of Mexico. People sometimes forget that Spanish is a European/white language, that was introduced to Mexico.

One of the native tribes of Mexico is the Tarahumara people. The Tarahumara learn to run before they walk, and they can run for days without stopping. Their running abilities enable them to run down a deer until it becomes exhausted.

"Rarámuri means "foot-runner" or "he who walks well," and they've been known to irritate American ultramarathoners by beating them while wearing huarache sandals and stopping now and then for a smoke."

You probably wouldn't be surprised to learn that Mexican farmworkers in California don't necessarily speak English. But you might be surprised to learn that they don't necessarily speak Spanish either.

In central and southern California, there are now tens of thousands of Mexican farmworkers from the Oaxaca area who speak Mixtec -- a native language that is totally unrelated to Spanish, just as English is totally unrelated to Navajo. This can cause real problems in (for example) criminal proceedings, because of the difficulty in finding anyone who can communicate with a defendant.

 

25 days remaining. There are not a lot of easy internet connections in Chiapas but I'll try to stay in touch. I don't speak much Spanish (and no Mayan) and so despite my coloration everyone knows I'm forastera. Good food. Good tequilla. Looking at some beachfront property. Back to you ASAP.
