    THUKWANE IS POND SCUM

Oh please...sounds like a case one would hear in Canada. Thukwanes victim had a right to LIVE!!! He did not seem to concern himself with human "rights" in that instance. Funny how hypocrisy works.

Speaking of hypocrisy...A MURDERER WITH AN LL.B degree!? What is next a Satanist with a Liberty University Degree?

Hello, I'm curious how the degrees are funded. Is is the same situation as the US where there is gigantic tuition reduction? I'm trying to keep an open mind on this. Be well. Have a great Sunday- Hille

That is a good question Hille. If it is publicly funded? The government should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

If they do give this convicted murderer the internet access who will pay for it. And by the way, who is paying for his course. I hope that the government is not paying. Schooling in South Africa is not free. We have had to pay schooling costs for our children for 12 years (which is the norm in SA) while they were at school, plus when they were at university we had to pay all their university costs.

I also wonder how they would monitor his use of the internet, and for what purpose. What about the other inmates. If this is given to him at state cost what then is the impact on normal schooling costs. Surely they must also be free.

Good Morning, I'm guessing that in the US we "collective citizens" pay for incarcerated education with our tax dollar. I believe at one time Villa Nova had a program for the incarcerated. This is an interesting topic which I will be checking out this week. Have a great day. Hille

I have mixed feelings on this subject (the general subject of higher ed for prisoners). I think anyone who commits murder should be executed forthwith, and if they should escape execution for some reason, should be locked away forever with no benefits whatsoever (including education).

However, I do think that higher education for the incarcerated can be a beneficial thing. Subsidizing higher education for prisoners who are going to be released eventually may be cheaper in the long run than paying for their reincarceration (this assumes that the education pays off by preventing future criminal acts).

I too, have mixed emotions about providing access to distance eduction to a convicted felon. What defies comprehension is that a "death row" or "for the rest of your natural life" inmate would have any use for a degree, unless it is applied to appealing his conviction with a Law Degree (LL.B.). The other issue is that tax dollars are being spent on convicts, when there are so many "law abiding citizens" who can not attend college due to finances.

Many states use statistics to show that incarceration costs vs. education costs illustrate a long-term savings to taxpayers. One such study, by the Maryland Department of Correction notes that: "Research indicates it costs about $10 million to incarcerate 100 individuals over four years. For an additional million dollars, we can give them a college education and reduce the percentage who will likely return to prison to about 15% in comparison to about 50% of the general inmate population. We can save taxpayers millions of dollars by providing this post secondary education opportunity." http://www.msde.state.md.us/pressreleases/2000/august/2000-0830a.html

IMHO, this is bull fecal matter! If we are to believe that 85% of those released will go on to become productive citizens (they used the term likely), who pays for their Masters degree should they be erred in their prediction? You!

  8. Thukwane is serving a sentence of just 10 years, despite being described in the article as a "murderer." So I can see why he would want an LLB -- so he can improve his chances of getting off next time.
