Dr. Bear's thread on DegreeInfo numerology gave me an idea for a little contest. This is going to be a little bit like those contests where you have to guess the number of jellybeans in the jar except there's a twist. You not only have to know how many are in the jar but you also have to guess what is being counted, what sorts of things are in the jar. So your guess has to be in two parts,

    1) What is being counted
    2) What is the count

    For example, you might guess

    1) total number of posts
    2) 250,000

If necessary I will provide hints intermittently. Here's the first one. The Mods are not allowed to participate in this contest because we are the only one's who actually have access to the answer. Regular members can not "look this up." It will be a total guess for you. I will respond to all guesses and so if you pay attention over time you can narrow the categories and the numbers.

Now for the good part, prizes. The winner can choose between receiving a six pack of Carling Black Label Beer or a six pack of Narragansett Lager. We will award the top 6 contestants in this way,

    1st place - 6 beers
    2nd place - 5 beers
    3rd place - 4 beers
    etc.

All guesses must be made in THIS thread. LET THE GAMES BEGIN ! ! !

Wow, that's a generous prize offering compared to mine.

    My guess

I will guess that 100 marbles are being counted.

    My guess:

What is being counted: the number of entries into this contest.
    The number: 27

(PS: I am happy to add to the prize pot, by donating my genuine University of Phoenix baseball cap to the second-place winner.)

Sounds like a plan! I will donate to the prize pool ($20 Starbucks gift card so you can study more late at night and because I do not have a cool hat like John).

John - will you autograph the hat? If so, I want to win second place!

Neither marbles nor contest entries are being counted. Keep trying, there's no limit to the number of guesses per member.

Wow, how's the team doing this year? I hear they are playing Capella soon and then NCU.

Would it be how many licks it takes to get the to center of a Tootsie Pop? Answer - no one knows!

I know I can't play but I just had to post this.

    Here is my guess...

What is being counted: How many people get suckered into a degree mill scam per year.
Count: Roughly 21,500 people a year.

Degree Mills:An Old Problem And A New Threat (April 2005)

Estimate from a few years stats. Rough estimate from Michigan 600 and Oregon's 200. Average out 430 (multiplied by 50 states as a rough estimate) gave my my prediction that 21,500 people buy degree mills on a yearly basis.

    Am I the winner?

I don't understand the game, so maybe it's not a bad thing that I'm not allowed to play :dead1:

The number seems amazingly low. I feel like I've seen 21,500 advertisements for degree mills in the last year alone.

No, that wouldn't be it because it has nothing to do with degreeinfo ! ! !

Randall: John - will you autograph the hat? If so, I want to win second place!
John: Sure, for my usual 5¢ autographing fee. It's not even my hat; Russ BLahetka (remember him?) left it at my house 4 or 5 years ago, and didn't want it back.

SurfDoctor: Wow, how's the (U of Phoenix) team doing this year? I hear they are playing Capella soon and then NCU.
John: 25 years ago, when I was consulting with Columbia Pacific, I proposed they get a little publicity by challenging Thomas Edison State to a series of what was then charmingly called Postal Chess. Never happened. Nowadays it would be the APBA computer baseball game, which I thoroughly enjoy.

    Contest entry

    b. Six times ten to the 23rd.

    Contest entry
    a. How many states will Romney win?
    b. 27, but it won't be enough.

    Contest entry
    a. How many yards passing for Tom Brady against Arizona this weekend?
    b. 142, but it won't be enough.

No, it's not directly related to degree mills but it is about people who break the rules (That was the next hint).

Sorry, but those guesses are incorrect. Besides, if you think that Arizona has even a small chance against New England today then you are doubly wrong.

Kizmet: "Besides, if you think that Arizona has even a small chance against New England today then you are doubly wrong."

John: Does this afternoon's missed 42-yarder mean that I'm doubly right? (That doesn't mean I'm happy; how can one support a team whose home field is University of Phoenix Stadium?)

    New entry:
Question: Percent of students who admit cheating on exams.
Answer: According to InsiderHigherEd last March, 60%.

I can't believe that the Cardinals beat the Pats. I need to launch an investigation!

    :banghead:

BTW - No, it doesn't have to do with cheating on exams. That's got nothing to do with DegreeInfo.
