Does The Internet Make You Dumb? Top German Neuroscientist Says Yes - And Forever - Worldcrunch - All News is Global Interesting assertions. What say you, DI forum folks?
I spent countless hours in front of the TV as a child and now I spend countless hours in front of the computer. I guess that means there's no hope for me.
So, to prove the Internet is bad for kids, Dr. Spitzer quotes Pestalozzi, an 18th to early 19th Century educator. Relax- I'm sure the Internet wasn't as well-developed in Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi's day. Pestalozzi was right about what he said -- children DO learn with their hearts -- but I don't think the Internet is going to destroy that any time soon. Last month, I finished writing a story about two young children. In it, I wrote specifically about their seeing with their hearts as well as their eyes. They happen to be two of my grandchildren, a brother and sister. They both like the Internet and their parents set reasonable total screen-time for them. They're about as far from dumb as it gets! I find the Internet keeps leading me to books - sometimes books I would not have known about otherwise. Most of us DI readers, myself included, have taken courses via the Internet - instruction we might not have been able to take by any other medium. I'm more interested in how it works in real life than these findings in a lab -- and I'm older than Dr. Spitzer. He's 54, I'm 70...and still a happy surfer. Johann
