My Turnitin Originality Report indicates a 44% Similarity Index. Out of the 44%, 29% is attributed to my prior dissertation proposal submitted a few months back. If my calculations are correct, that would mean the similarity complex for my study is 15%. I combed through my paper and noticed that Turnitin has included direct quotes and ideas I've taken from articles in the report, even though I have given credit to the author of those statements. Not sure what to think of the report since I am unfamiliar with Turnitin. Should I be concerned? BTW, my paper (minus references and title pages) tops off at about 280 pages.

Although I would check with your chair, seems to me that 15% is not unreasonable. My guess is most of the 15% would be in the introduction and lit review. As long as everything is attributed, you should be ok.

    Good luck!

Many instructors are beginning to use this to identify cheaters, my junior college began using it religiously.

Mine was about the same because it had a match from my previous paper. If you have a lot of 1% matches or <1% matches and the bulk is from a previous match or direct quotes that you identified as a direct quote, you should be fine. I would just tell your chair, "Hey I noticed a high match but that is because my previous paper was submitted" Let them know that you know why it is 44%.

Plus, I don't think many submissions are much lower than about 12% to 18% just because it matches so many things that are obviously not plagiarism of other works. Author's names, book titles, common phrases, Etc. At least, that has been my experience with another checker. All of my papers, which were totally original, still showed a match percentage in that range. Maybe Turnitin is different, I don't know.
