Horrible. He was a PhD student in nuerosciences. When the cops arrested him he had red hair and told them he was the "Joker". Crazy dude. Condolences to the families of those murdered and injured.
I live fairly near Aurora. The local TV stations have been covering the situation non-stop since early this morning. What impresses me is the response by police, firemen, and hospital workers. Police cars were used as ambulances to get the wounded to local hospitals probably saving lives.
Why is this horrible? Dozens of people are killed with guns every day, thousands annually. I doubt the number of gun-related deaths that day was all that remarkable, despite a dozen deaths. We're shocked because it happened all at once. The people of Colorado killed those people with their state's insane gun laws. No other Western nation on Earth kills people with guns on a scale that even approaches the U.S. Commentators in all media act as if these situations are acts of nature, like an earthquake or hurricane. As if we as a society were powerless to virtually obliterate it. Have we become so desensitized to gun violence as to simply accept its inevitability? No one else in the modern world has. Unlike drugs or alcohol, guns are hard to manufacture illegally on a large scale. Prohibition of varying degrees works in civilized nations all over the world. Except here. The beat (and dying) goes on.....
