I dont know about you guys, but Russel Crowe got ripped off!
I mean Denzel is alright....but come on.

 

He won best actor last year for "Gladiator". The Academy
normally doesn't award consecutive oscars to an actor.

 

I think there were other reasons why he didnt win. Reasons much more political (liberal). On the night Sidney Poiter (sic) wins lifetime achievement award, 2 black actors win the Oscar. What a surprise.

 

Let's see, voting is done weeks in advance by sealed ballot, and yet some people think it was rigged, hmmm.

Heh, how about a another wierd thought, maybe the actor 7 actress who got the most votes won! I realize this may be non cormfomist, but it is a possiblity.

 

Denzel Washington: Nominated five times without a Best Actor Oscar. Julia Roberts said late last year that she had no desire to work in an industry where Denzel Washington could continue to produce high-quality work without getting a single win (so when they called her on stage to present the Best Actor award, I knew Washington was going to get it). The tradition of awarding an actor a compensatory Oscar for ignoring previous worthy performances is a venerable one (see, for example, the career of Al Pacino; they ignored him for almost two decades, then finally gave him a win for Scent of a Woman to make up for the dry spell).

Halle Berry: Roger Ebert called Monster's Ball the movie of the year, and predicted a Halle Berry win. This didn't surprise me.

It certainly does seem interesting that the second African-American Best Actor and first African-American Best Actress would get their trophies at the same ceremony where the first African-American Best Actor just happens to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, but stranger things have happened. Which is not to say that I'd say it was all a coincidence (I don't think anything that happens at the Oscars is a coincidence), but it didn't come across as particularly contrived to me. Both Washington and Berry were strong favorites coming in.

My sister-in-law is literally fanatical about Russell Crowe, but the more I read about him, the more convinced I am that he's a total jerk in real life. Did that factor into the Academy Awards voting? Probably. Shame on him, IMO.

I do recall hearing that he'd been less-than-kind to a director about a month before the awards, and seem to remember some very knowledgeable people citing this as something that could cost him his Oscar.

Maybe I'm just partial to the name, but Russell should have won.

 

Any time my confidence in the American system (political, social, economic, etc) is shaken, something strange will happen. I went to bed by 10:00 pm (EST) on Sunday expecting the status quo to take place but I was wrong. When I woke up and listened to ABC news the following morning, I learnt that Denzel has won the best actor award. I quipped "finally". Needless to say that I was overjoyed when I heard the news. It took forty years but that's all the more reason why I was ecstatic about the award.
Folks, I have to confess that America is the best place for people of all races to live. Although no system (political, economic, etc) is without faults, the American system remains the best. Denzel is a great actor. So is Russell Crowe and many, many, many other fine actors. Even if some people think that Denzel did not deserve it, I believe that this award to Denzel restored the credibility and respectability of Oscar among black people and other people of color.

One more thing: I was tearful (tears of joy) when I heard the news. The last time I shed tears was when my mother passed on.

 

Is it an Oscar® tradition that the previous year's female (male) lead winner present the current year's male (female) winner?

Not always, but Julia Roberts was the darling of the 2001 Oscars; it would have made sense for her to give out one of the major awards, preferably one other than Best Actress (the one she won).

A quick google search yielded some results indicating that it is a tradition. e.g. "As is tradition, Russell as winner for Best Actor last year, will be presenting the Best Actress award." Last year Hillary Swank present to Crowe, Kevin Spacey presented to Julia Roberts. Jule presented male lead to Denzel because she'd won last year (not as a cute tell). I might be convinced otherwise had Arthur Anderson been responsible for the tallies instead of PwC
