The hiring of non vets for veteran jobs funded specifically for veterans only

I have discovered that the government agency I work for is improperly placing non veterans in jobs funded for veterans, specifically. Federal monies are allocated for the vet programs/jobs, etc. (in other words, to be a vet rep, you have to be vet yourself)

I have also uncovered the contract language that stipulates what I said above. However, I was hoping to get a violation code from the Department of Labor for this violation to make an even stronger case. I currently have an email out to a DOL representative, however, that could take a few days.

Does anyone here happen to work for the Feds? Perhaps some of our vets here have an answer?

    Thanks,

    Abner

    Abner,

    Start here:

    VETS -- Fact Sheet 1

you should be able to find contact information on the Federal Grant as to who awarded it and the particulars. Normally Vet hiring is a Federal employment concern and as such any violations at the state level may be contractual in nature until uncovered and investigated, at which point other issues may arise.

    Best of luck

Thanks! I also emailed the Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis regarding this problem. I believe an audit by the feds should be done.

Although they are state employees, I know the vet reps are paid out of Wagner Peysner funds.

I'm going to bust this thing WIDE OPEN!

Oh, I will! Fair is fair.

That's cool that you are going to be a vet soon. Way to go!

This is corruption in a big scale. However, have you ever thought that there will come a time that all the veterans will have died. So who will do their jobs for these people?

Every year there are literally tens of thousands of people discharged from the military after initial tours, full careers, etc. As long as people serve their hitch honorably and are discharged there will always be plenty of vets for jobs. A vet serves their time in the military honorably they are a vet. They do not have to have served in combat or have been wounded to be counted as a vet. You also do not have to be completely out of the military to be considered a vet. I was discharged from the Marine Corps with 20% disability. I am still able to serve in the National Guard and I am considered a veteran.

    Abner,

I did not know that funds could be specified for jobs specifically for vets? Oh crap, I just read you are state and not federal. From what I know (which I'll admit is almost nil about everything) vets get preference for most jobs. Whether a vet fills that job is dependant on qualifications (plus any preference points) if a vet gets the job then great, but if there is someone more qualified then they should get the job but the funds for those positions does not come out of a different pot of money than any other job.

I know that Obama has given direction on the hiring of vets for federal positions, but I do not know about if those positions are funded any different. I belong to a board where they discuss federal hiring. Most people on there are sure that unqualified vets are getting jobs that they themselves should be getting, but since most vets get preference points they assume that the vet is not qualified and only getting the job becuase he is a vet (which may or may not be true in some cases).

    Anyway, thanks for looking out.

Yeah, at the State level, DOL funds are allocated to the State strictly for the hiring of veterans for "Veteran Rep" positions. In other words, to be a vet rep, you must be a vet and must produce a valid DD214. These positions MUST NOT/MAY NOT be filled by non-vets, plain and simple. Apparently, some in management have been making up their own policies in these regards, even though to do so defies their own managment policy, MOU's and the union contract ( which they agree to and sign off in good faith). I also consider this a misappropriation of dedicated funds. When my mentor was alive, this is how it was always done, and I aim to enforce that. This issue was within the expertise of my former labor/union mentor, A Korean War vet and a vet rep. I guess now that he has been dead, management has decided to self create their own policies. I aim to speak for my former mentor, who is no longer here to speak on his/vets behalf.

I am to bring in several vet/union/political groups in who have strong ties to the DOL VET administration to assist me. I myself am not a vet, but I do come from a military family and I wish this tradition to stay. For example, who better to serve someone suffering from PTSD than say a combat vietnam era vet? A fellow vet.

Ah, 2012 is going to be interesting. This is going to take a multi layer approach. The challenges never end.

P.S. To those who don't like the ten point vet preference rule? Too bad!

I can see where having a vet working specifically in positions directly related to vets would be beneficial. I would also think these would be great positions to have for most veterans. Do they advertise these positions specifically towards vets, in veterans publications or service magazines? It seems like you would have more than enough qualified vets applying for those types of positions. Especially in this economy.

Well, keep up the good fight and enjoy your holidays!
