Can a student check the status of their recommendation letters for a Master's degree application? Is there any way that students can check if these were all positive? If there is some problem with any, can the student learn of this?

If you are unsure as to whether or not a person is giving you a good recommendation. YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

Generally you have access to the contents of your application file unless you waive permission to view it. Many recommendation forms have this waiver attached. If not waived, it is possible to view them, though viewing them will likely be viewed negatively.

YES. You may want to ask, "Would you be willing to give me a favorable recommendation to . . . "

My friend believes someone with a grudge sent an extra letter to the school.

The school website says on the internet what letters the school got. Will it also list ones that someone sent extra without the form or using email and weren't requested by him?

That depends on the school. He could always call to "verify which letters have been received."
