A lot has been written about these facilities, and WWASP in particular. The problem appears to be that WWASP is cozy with a number of (apparently mostly Republican) high-ups in the states where they operate, and that has effectively shielded them from serious scrutiny. There is a pretty well-researched book about this and other "therapeutic" schools out there, and what the writer of the Reddit article says has been documented by many others. Many "graduates" have attempted to sue or take criminal action and apparently WWASP fights dirty. Why this organization continues to operate simply defies logic.
I think this has gone viral a long time ago. What's sad is the behavior of the kids before they get sent to these places and the lack of legit options for parents of out of control teens. (to be followed with comments of "if the parents would just do their jobs'')
This is horrible. Was the parents never thought of checking their daughter? The things she have gone through that boarding school is not right and the people should be punished. Parents should have been responsible enough to see that they are sending their kid to hell. So disappointing.
When I was young, juvies were sent to Reform School when they became out of control. More wealthy parents sent their errant offspring to Military Academies (not West Point, etc, but middle and high school versions), or special boarding schools such as Elan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elan_School. However, we had a situation in the DC area, where a single mother from Prince George's County checked her son into the DC Children's Hospital after he stabbed his cousin in the eye with a pencil, and then threatened to kill himself. She refused to accept him back for several months, because she could not deal with him. The father wanted to take him (he had remarried), but he had a small child who would be endangered by the son's presence. The County and DC went back and forth on this one, until the kid was finally transferred to a facility near Philadelphia. Some students are more than "bad boys"/"bad girls" and need psychological help instead of a reform school, such as in the case that I mentioned above. I also agree that this help is hard to get for severe cases.
