    Wise words to heed:

Fukodo said she approached Judo and her life with the intent to "be gentle, kind and beautiful, yet firm and strong, both mentally and physically." Fukuda says this kind of beauty is decidedly not external. "A compassionate soul is inner beauty," she explained to the paper. "I believe this is true beauty...All my life this has been my dream."

When I was training at the Kodokan (1997 - 2000), I didn't think she was even 7th dan then. Looks like that Japanese good ol' boys club is starting to come around.

There was a woman who came to our annual circle dance camp to celebrate her 100th birthday. She danced a lot, schmoozed a lot, and had a fine time.

(Sadly, she had a stroke and died a few months later. Lovely photos at Circle Dancing, clicking on "Leonore Fine".)

(The founder of the camp, in the Sierras where we dance, Far Horizons, is 105 and going strong. And one of our regulars started dancing with an Isadora Duncan group, and has been dancing for 87 years. Good to know such things are possible. Keep on dancing, whatever that may mean for you!)

I started three months ago, and tested for yellow belt last night. If my fat ass can do it at 37, you can do it at 22.

HUT HUT HUT HUT HUT!!!!!!!!!!!! No distractions in the dojo!!!!!!!!! If you are caught talking to your neighbor, you will do ten push ups and move up from there each time!!!!!!!! And if you don't bow in or out every time you enter or leave the dojo, you WILL start at 50 push ups.
