May I request of the admins a increase in the number of characters allowed in signatures? 300-400 would be nice.

Reason: It stinks to have to abbrieviate or omit accomplishments if you've many. Especially since some of the threads are benefited by responses from those who have either gone to specific schools and programs or who carry certifications that otherwise don't display well.

    Consideration appreciated.

So with this be a matter of "my signature is bigger then yours"?

Personally I don't care how many characters there are in a signature but I can say that I wouldn't want people to be able to list a ton of lines of various accomplishments in their signature. Before you know it threads will starting becoming like the all the sticky's that we have to scroll through just to get to the first post.

If threads benefit from the responses from those who have attended why not just respond in the thread that you have attend there or have that accomplishment and give the info that way?

    I request a 1,000 character sig line

J/K. I know I got out of hand with all the schools I have attended. I kind of started getting out of control.

So in reply to Randell and eilla -

Personally, I don't care about the dueling signature phenomena or the signature is bigger than the post phenomena.

What led me to suggest this is the following:

    1. I have received PMs from people asking for feedback on the schools I've attended, based on them being in my signature or my post content.
    2. I have received some questions about my stance against some schools I've attended that would be best served in context of having attended them.
    3. I see value in listing the schools I've attended or that I am attending because of points (1) and (2) above.
    4. I will run into a character limit as soon as I list the extension school this fall.
    5. There are significant differences between WGU programs and UMass programs in specific schools and I don't want perception issues arising as it pertains to points (1) and (2) above.
    6. I will have to abbrieviate my programs without a character limit increase, which creates issues with point (5) above.

So I asked about an increase. Simple, really. As to why not respond that I've attended somewhere in the thread, no reason why I couldn't save one:

    7. If I put my schools in my signature, and a school I comment on in that way is not in my signature, it creates a credibility gap. So if I want to reply that way, I should not use a signature at all. Not a problem, save that using the signature seems to be a defacto cultural norm.

Sides, all I'm asking for is the ability to not have to change my sig and add a school fully come the fall. If the signature line threshold is generous enough I may add high-level certifications but I'm not looking to go back to kindergarten or put in every initial I've earned somewhere. As some have implied, it could get ridiculous fast.

Very well put, I think you make a lot of valid points. I too can see the need for more sig space; I would even like to see people who work at certain schools list that so you know who to go directly to when you have a question.

    Dear Administrator and Moderators:

Can non-spam members allow to have more characters in signature? I need approximate 350 characters versus 200 characters. Have a fantastic weekend.

You could always try to become a moderator. That'll get you a bigger sig line.

I have no idea if this is possible, but maybe the amount of characters allowed should correlate with the amount of posts each user provides. We have some "heavy hitters" that have been around awhile and continually give great input and advice. So the more you contribute, the more room in your signature.

    Ex. 0-500 posts= 100 character limit
    500-1000 posts= 300 character limit
    1000+ post= 800 character limit

Now I know there are some post whores here (guilty) who would get an increased character limit by default, but it would give folks a greater understanding of the qualifications held by some of our more experienced contributes such as Dr.Pena, SurfDoctor, TEKMAN, KIZMET, Bruce, Randell1234, ect . . . (Sorry if I left anybody out)

Like I said I have no idea if something like that is possible, but it would ensure the right peoples signatures limits would increase while first time posters couldn't use the additional space for spam.

    Just a suggestion . . .

That's actually a very interesting idea. To the best of my knowledge vBulletin, our DB platform, does not support that option, but I could be wrong. If it doesn't, that might be a nice idea for future upgrades.

The whole point of limiting sig lines, according to Chip the owner, is to thwart spammers who use sig lines to try to accomplish their goals. People with many posts have proven that they are not spammers.

It is possible to do what NorCal asked. The hitch is, to do it, I have to export all of the current members into a different class of member, and then set the values (signature, etc) for that class, and then restrict the standard class of member that you get when you join.

It's a big and sort of messy job so I've been waiting until I have some time to concentrate on it... but since I've been saying that forever, and it hasn't happened, I probably just need to make time to do it. I'll try and make that happen sometime in the not-distant future :)
