Statistics is kicking my butt

Have you even felt like your being strung around through a course and you can barley keep up, and given any hick-up (No matter how small), you feel like you could crack; well I'm at this point now.

I have an instructor teaching out of a book he wrote, which is terribly vague and confusing as hell. Statistics is a tuff enough course on its own, without the need to complicate the issue with poor course material.

I turned in a test related to Statistical Process & Control in order to see if the given processes were stable or unstable, and to determine why the processes are that way and what could be used to improve them. I work them out using material I don't fully understand, and submit my work. My instructor emails me to day and states: "Everything you sent me is correct, except: #1-5."

The test was only 5 questions, WTF is he talking about!! Either their correct or they are not. I hate instructors like this !!

Normally I would consult the instructor for guidance, but the few times I spoken to him, he just talks over your head and can't seem to understand why your having trouble keeping up.

Sorry, I just needed to rant.

    Carry-on . . .

From what I gather, that is the point of stats. I'm sure you'll pass, and move on to something more fun

I'm actually looking forward to stats, since it will be mostly new to me and I've heard so many WONDERFUL things about it  I'll take your warning example and make sure to do it at a time when I can focus 100% on it... and either Uexel or ALEKS it to avoid a potential Mr.Malaprof.

Ughhhhhh sorry you have such a sucky teacher. I passed stats ONLY by watching Khan videos (I've never taken algebra, I took pre-algebra in high school 100 years ago and general math for my undergrad- so that tells you where I was pre-stats). Start at video 1 and there ya go. He only has about 12 hours worth if I recall, so you could be right side up again by week's end. Life saver. I promise.

I've never heard of Khan Videos, but I have now and book marked the page.

Thanks for the tip, I need all the help I can get.

OH! Ok, sorry. For anyone else: Khan Academy These are free. Anything math/science related in about 10 minutes or less. He was honored with a HUGE cash donation by Bill Gates and has appeared on TED Talks. It's really kinda cool to say this, but I've been watching his videos since he was just "a guy on youtube." Anyway, he uses Micorsoft Paint to draw on his screen like a chalkboard. He's real, he isn't like anyone you've listened to, and he makes things pretty darn simple. Just for fun, read his educational bio. :) Enjoy!!

I've got to say, this is an awesome resource that I never knew even existed. Here is the link to the video on the Colbert Report:

Salman Khan - The Colbert Report - 6/2/11 - Video Clip | Comedy Central

I hope you can take the time to see this video and check it out, what a useful tool for those of us in college taking difficult courses. I'll tell you what, its ideas such as DegreeInfo and the Khan Academy that are making a huge difference in education today.

+1 on the Khan Academy. You can also check out iTunes U for some additional open source materials.

It's not a book that was ever published, it more like a long packet that he sends out in a pdf.

Here is a copy of a recent email he sent me regarding my last assignment:

    Dean,

Here is some feedback for test 5. Everything you sent me is correct, except:

    1. Problem 2 is unstable, not stable. The UCL is 17 and there is one data point (20) above the UCL. That makes it stable.

    2. Problem 4 is stable, not unstable. All the data points should lie between the LCL and the UCL.

Please rework these and send them to me. I also need your answers to the four improvement questions.

    Best regards

I'm heading into the last 2 weeks of the course, and I am worried. End result is that if I pass Statistics, I graduate in 10 weeks; where if I fail statistics, my target graduation date will be extended. No pressure huh. . . .

I am in complete and utter disbelief, I completed my final for Statistics and turned it in a few days ago and I've been freaking out ever since; hoping to at least pull a "C" in that class.

So after reading my professors email, I've decided to go purchase a lotto ticket . . . .

    I got an "A" in statistics !!! :icon16:

I would rather get deployed before I would take another statistics course. This is the highest grade I've received in math since the first grade, lol.
