How important is quality in one's earliest publications?

I'm writing some articles, but wonder if it wise to send them off for publication in an academic journal. I don't have any professors working with me on this now. Would it be a mistake to just send my articles off to be published? Is it possible that I could get something published, perhaps fraught with problems undetectable or inconsequential to the editor, that could later prove harmful to my career?

If you think they are publication-worthy, then I would send them. If they are not up to the quality expected, then they will be rejected. You will often get feedback on what you need to improve.
