Future of Christian focus of Potchefstroom Univ

  1. There has been some concern about the sustainability of the Christian focus (unique among state-sponsored SA universities) of Potchefstroom University in the face of the proposed merger with UNW. For some assurance, this is from the initial response of Potchefstroom University Management Committee:

    • As far as the Christian foundations of the PU for CHE is concerned, the report is not negative and those responsible for preparing it believe that with "goodwill and a constructive attitude and approach, it could be possible to explore common values and shared commitments and creatively build a new identity which would on the one hand enrich the existing institutional cultures and, on the other, retain the impact of these cultures as inspirational sources of loyalty and support." We believe that this aspect can therefore dealt with successfully.

I would certainly hope that they can keep their Christian focus. In my opinion, far too many Christian schools in our country are indistinguishable from their secular or state-supported counterparts. Perhaps because most other countries do not understand religion in exactly the same "church vs. state" dynamic that we employ, the situation in SA will allow the school to maintain a high degree of Christian integrity. I would expect Russell will check in on this one--as he has an interest in SA theological programs. At any rate the documentation you provide looks promising.

    Blessings, Craig

Just today I e-mailed my promoter at PUCHE, Dr. Ben de Klerk, regarding the proposed merger, and subsequent ramifications. When a response is received I will share his post in this thread.

In the FWIW department: I imagine your program will certainly retain its Christian focus, even if the institution as a whole becomes more secular (South African universities as a whole are very friendly to sectarian theology departments, and I have to believe they'll be left alone to do their own thing). What I'm more concerned about is whether the merger will affect the relationship between Potchefstroom and Greenwich School of Theology.

    Please do keep me posted.

I received an e-mail today from Herrie van Rooy (PUCHE), which stated that they are not sure at this point what the outcome of the proposed merger will be. He also stated that whatever the outcome it would not affect the relationship between PUCHE and Greenwich School of Theology, and that current students would in no way be affected.

    We shall see what develops!

This is good to hear, Russell--thanks!

Another concern I have is that the article mentioned, at the bottom, that the Universty of Zululand would be asked to "refocus"; does anyone know if this will harm its relationship with SATS?

    Cheers,

I noticed the same, Tom. Perhaps Bill Highsmith could comment on this particular institution(s).
