So my wife drives a little Toyota 2D that has well over 160K and it has been an awesome car with no problems. However, as we move forward and see kids in our near future we are considering getting something that can haul around kids, dogs, ect. I have a Chevy Tahoe, which I love, but I'd like something smaller and better on gas for my wife that also has some decent room. Subaru is the top contender because of the AWD opinion and my wife has family in areas that require driving through the snow. Here are some of the vehicles we are considering: Subaru Forester (2009+) Subaru Outback (2010+) Toyota Camry (2008+) We'd like to keep the price lower than $20,000 and buy something used to save some cash. Does anyone have any experiences with any of the models listed above or recommendations for something I haven't listed or thought of already?
Not personal experience, but I've visited Alaska 5 times and noticed that Subarus are very popular vehicles there. To me that's a +1 in the drive-in-snow category.
Subarus are also very popular in the Pacific Northwest and New England. Personally, I'm not a fan. A car you might want to look at is the Volvo XC70. All wheel drive and I'm not going to lie, it is the only station wagon on the planet that I would be proud to drive. I like them a lot, lots of room and they handle really well/are fun to drive. Is your Tahoe one of the newer models? If so, do you like it? I drove a 2003 Z71 Tahoe for about 6 years and loved it. I've been driving a 5-series for the last two years but want to go back to something big. I'm considering either the new Z71 Tahoe or Ford F-250 King Ranch.
We have a Forester as the family car. It is comfortable and great in snow. Zero complaints regarding it.
My Tahoe is a 1998, 2 door 4WD model, and I absolutely love the truck. The Volvo's I took a look at, but my wife hates the look of a station wagon. The newer model line of the Subaru's, although station wagons, have more or an SUV look to them which I why I was able to sell them to my wife. She really wants a Jeep but I have mixed feelings regarding their reliability and resale.
Those late 90s 2 door Tahoes are great. I drove a 2 door Yukon when I was at Auburn. Ahhhhh memories flooding back. Personally I think the Volvo XC70 does have a SUV/crossover look to it. Sits higher, etc. But if your wife isn't sold my opinion doesn't mean much.

Yeah, I messed up big time. I thought I was posting in the off topic section. Hopefully the mods see my note in the post above yours so it can be moved! Abner
I had a Subaru Outback several years ago and loved it. The only problem was that servicing became very expensive when it stated to fail smog tests. We traded it in for a new 2005 Odyssey. When we move to Colorado we plan on buying a new Subaru Imprezza outback sport. MSRP is under $20K. We usually get good deals on our vehicles by going though Costco or AAA.
