Ok, I started a thread last year about this, but I wanted to post a separate thread now that some new IT stuff has come out. What mini laptop or notebook can I get for around $300.0 - $550.00. I really just want it to check and send emails while travelling.

    Thanks,

    Abner :)

If you're near a Micro Center, they're currently selling Acer netbooks for as little as $199. I bought one of them recently and it works great. (Although the first thing I did was wipe it and install Linux, no idea how well it runs with Windows.)

Damn! For $199.00 it seems like you can't go wrong.

There is Micocenter listed not to far from where I live.

    Thanks,

    Abner

My Acer Aspire One is a little over two years old and still plugging along great for checking the e-mail, surfing the web, and the occasional Skype with the family while I'm travelling. It does get a little bogged down when having multiple programs open and isn't the best for watching videos. I still run Windows on mine with no major complaints.

On the high end of your range is the Dell Alienware 11" laptop. The nice part about it, is it running full Intel processors (not Atom/netbook) and mine has a 1 gig video card as well so I can play games too!! HDMI out, and I can use it to watch movies, etc.

$599 is where they have been and you usually can google and find a coupon that will save you $50 to get down to $550. (I did that and then upgraded ram to 2 gig or 4 I forget which and was back to $599)

    Good luck

Meant to say sometime during the week I'm going to roll over there and pick one up before they run out. They close at 9pm, so that's good! Thanks for the reviews guys. Sounds exactly what I am looking for. I saw a dude at Del Taco using one, and he said it worked for him. I don't plan on playing games on it.

I had one of those Acers, I was lucky to get an hour out of the battery. Now I can't use it at all without the AC adapter.

Why not an iPad? Super light, and great battery life. The iPad 1 dropped about $100 since the iPad2 came out.

I love my iPad for traveling but I've heard complaints about the entry-level ones (lack of storage space, only wifi, etc.). My biggest complaint is that it isn't compatible with Flash. The entry-level iPad1 is now $399. You could buy one of the mini-PCs with more processing power for less money. I was in Toys R US this weekend shopping for a gift for my baby cousin and they had a ton of the mini computers at deep discounts there. Maybe check their website.

Mine runs for several hours on battery. Perhaps you got a defective one?

I know quite a few people who use their cell phones (Blackberries) to do this and more (I have no idea what the cost is however).

If you want to feel ahead of the curve, you can upgrade your cell phone to the Motorola Atrix and get the Lapdock to go with it ... it lets you dock your phone and use it like a normal laptop ... see here (bottom of page)

    About - MOTOROLA ATRIX

I can see this sort of tech becoming very popular in 2-3 years, eventually replacing most traditional laptops. As for how well it works now, I'm not sure.

I have a Dell Insiron Mini (10" screen) that works fine for me. It's small enough to haul around without trouble and will go for 2-3 hours on the battery (I rarely need it to go beyond an hour). I'd ultimately like something smaller but I don't pay much attention to all the newest gadgets. Increasingly people I see are using little PDAs for everything - no land line at home, etc.

There are variety of new tablets out competing with the iPad. The two that come to mind are Dell and Motorola. I know that Blackberry has one coming out soon that has a 7 inch display. It looks pretty cool. Might be something to look into.

I used to suspect that Macs were overrated and overpriced. But then I worked in a computer lab full of them for several years. Now I know from experience that they're overrated and overpriced.

I am usually very slow to upgrade on these gadgets because it just doesn't seem worth it to me (personal value judgement). I know a few people who not only HAVETOHAVE every last gizmo on the market and they're constantly upgrading everything they've got and are VERY happy to tell you all about the latest features and blah and blahblah. That's OK. I tend to think that for them it's like a kind of hobby, no better or worse than someone who buys a motorcycle and spends a lot of time tuning it up, looking at aftermarket options, etc. It seems that we're very close to the time where you'll only need one gizmo and it will do pretty much anything - dock it into a home theatre system, use voice recognition technology, music, movies, internet, phone etc. There are probably people doing that now (I know we recently had a thread related to "going internet.") I am behind the curve in that regard and probably will stay there. Especially when people start talking about implanting chips, etc. a la "Johnny Mnemonic." (a decent sci-fi novel but a bad movie)

I went to Walmart to check out the Acer. I loved it. My wife and I are going to go to Micocenter and buy her on as well. I will go in to Walmart to shop, but I never purchase from there because I dislike their worker treatement.

Those little things were pretty frickin sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!
