So, maybe the young student won't agree, but for the parents- please make your children CLEP psychology and/or the Human Growth and Development courses. Why, you ask? You might think it would be to save $4460 in tuition for such class, but you'd be wrong. Well...oh just....just.... read on.....:censored:

I want to point out three things that I don't think the article does a good job of making clear.

    1) This was not a part of the class. This was an extracurricular event that the students were well informed of and given the choice to attend or not.

    2) Some prominent liberals in the media actually think that this teacher did the right thing. Personally, I'm disgusted, but my opinion usually gets mocked whenever I post it on the internet, so meh, have fun.

    3) The device in question is called the F*ck Saw. If you aren't squeemish, here's a picture of it I found somewhere Click Here WARNING: this is not safe for work, school, church, the library nor any of the few places where decency is still welcomed in our culture.

So that they can skip the prereq and sign up for this sooner? Seriously, I'm not sure what the fuss is about beyond that college students (who are by and large by definition not children) in a big city are probably already exploring fetishes. It was a student presentation which is the one thing you don't necessarily get from credit-by-exam.

It seems to me this is more of a Sociology topic, not so much Psych, but whatever.

College students are adults. Healthy adults often choose to have sex, in an amazingly diverse number of ways. This is just not that big a deal.

A student, completely nude, was brought to orgasm on stage using a vibrator in a demonstration by a guest lecturer hired by the psychology department at a top Chicago university as an extra-curricular activity of the course. And it's both defended and dismissed here? Interesting.

Not that I'd go to see it, but people watch other people having orgasms all the time. It's called porn. I suppose this was just a live version. :smileysex5:

(How funny is it that there's actually a Smiley called "smileysex5".)

Did you read the article? The demonstrating couple were guests of the guest lecturer. Not a student.

It wasn't a student. It was someone from the community that apparently does these "presentations" by request.

It's also called vacation in Amsterdam. This is tame compared to what you can see for 15 Euro in the RLD (so I've heard).

I will take your advice and CLEP, but I need your help.
I live very close to the Arctic Circle in an isolated Inuit community. I am over a thousand miles from the nearest Prometric center. Does anyone have any experiences doing exam-for-credit programs such as CLEP, ECE, COSC, DNTES, GRE, etc from very remote location? I am about 300 miles from the nearest community but it is another isolated community.

    Whoah! Threadlash!

I really don't see what there is to get ruffled about. Unorthodox? Yes. But, if it was a strictly voluntary presentation, then I don't see the issue.

I don't think it's an issue of doing the "right" thing. Every action is not in need of a value judgment. The professor simply offered a demonstration of a concept he saw as relevant to his class. To me, that is neither right nor wrong, nor is it worthy (if properly handled, as it appears it was) of condemnation. Again, just not a big deal.

Personally, I don't find it that shocking. But I wonder how many students later tried to "re-enact" the presentation...

Hey, I am responding to the portion of the post which is of interest to me “CLEP and Save $5K”. The part about the sex does not interest me. Isn’t Master and Johnson’s research was done studying prostitutes having sex? 70% of kids by the age of 17 have already been engage in sexual activities. I will assume the number is higher when they are in college. I have to admit I did not read the article, but an education intuition seems to be the appropriate place to study sex especially in a psychology class.

We (husband and I) saw this on our local news last week I believe it was. I personally thought it was inappropriate but my husband saw nothing wrong with it because 1. College students are adults and 2. They could have left anytime they wanted. From a parental standpoint I am little bothered by it and not sure I would want my son in a class such as this but on the other hand I hope teach my son to be open and not be ashamed of sex or anything related to sex so I am on the fence! For the record I do not want my son having sex until he is at least 21...yeah right like that is going to happen but I don't want him to grow up with sex problems and feeling ashamed about sexual actions because its natural.

    Anywho......

Frankly, I knew nothing about testing out while in High School. If I did, I would CLEP out every single courses in High School...just master the subject, and get some CLEP study material to take the exam at the end of the course. It is fresh, and easy to remember. For example, History 1,2; Government, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and etc.

Like using a large mechanical device to do the job? That's called mechanophilia.

"A guest lecturer had been discussing bondage and sexual fetishes during Bailey's human sexuality class. According to published reports, a couple at the lecture decided that a video the students were watching on the female orgasm was not realistic and gave a live presentation involving the sex toy."

Perhaps they weren't students. I should have gone to primary sources, my bad.

There's another point that needs to be made. Even if you believe that this "lesson" was inappropriate, there's no reason to believe that it is common. To try to stop your adult child from taking a course because once upon a time, in some other place, a small group of other people did something inappropriate is nonsensical. If we use that criteria then we can never let our children do anything.

I apologize. My comment was whimsical in nature; now that I re-read my post, I can see how it could be taken as derogatory. I certainly did not intend it to be so.

Now that I read your original post, it seems that you may get a better response from the community by starting a new thread with a title that is more relevant to your inquiry. I am familiar with all of the tests, but your situation seems particularly unique. Good luck!
