    Just a question?

I have been a member for over a year, read the forum daily but, as such am listed as a "New" member.

What are the graduation requirements to just "Member"?

    Furthermore,

If I set my sights high enough, how do I graduate to a "Senior".

the university forum catalog is unclear at this point!

    Thanks,
    BH.

Interesting question, I was wondering about that myself. I also noticed that there was a junior category the other day too, but it looks like it is gone now.

The "rank" of New, Senior, etc. is based on the number of posts you make, not the time you've been registered. For example, I think Russell Morris hit "Senior Member" in about 3 days. :D

The obvious solution is to hit the keyboard and contribute! :)

Well, it's rather arbitrary (a default feature of the new software.)

I've never liked the term "Junior Member", which is the default. On the old board, we made it "New Member." When somebody pointed out that it was showing as "Junior Member" on the new board, I just went in and changed it to "New".

Once you've made, I think, 30 posts, it changes to "Member" automatically. Also, after x number of days (can't remember) it also changes to "Member", but I think that x started when we ported to the new software, not to when the member originally registered. I'll look into that.

And "Senior Member" means 100 posts or more, or x plus some number of days. I noticed that Levicoff just went from "Member" to "Senior Member" in the last day or two.

It's all completely arbitrary and we should probably have done away with it entirely... I don't like that sort of elitist stuff, even though the folks that do Star Trek boards and hacker boards seem to really be into the whole status thing.

Now, if we were operating in degree mill mentality, we could sell member status to anyone who asked for a small fee, say $50 for "Member" $100 for "Senior Member"... and maybe even create a "Highly Esteemed Member, Respected by All" for a mere $300... with a combo deal where you could get all 3 for $395

    :D

    Hey, I'm not falling for that old trick unless I get my suitable embellished diploma printed on parchment paper and signed by all four (?) of the esteemed Administrator class members. {g}

Hey, Chip, it's time to bump up the number of posts required for senior status again!

Maybe you can change the default to:

    1. Freshman (1-250 posts)

    2. Sophmore (251-500 posts)

    3. Junior (501-575 posts)

    4. Senior (576-1000 posts)

    5. Graduate (1000-2000 posts)

    6. Doctoral Candidate (2001+ posts)

    :D

Come now, Bruce, Rich Douglas has many more posts than I. Actually, the most direct route to reach the coveted status of Senior Member is to earn a Ph.D. in three days--and it is possible. :D

Yes Russell, but we had to take into account your sabbatical, plus the fact that Rich is retired and thus has more disposable time on his hands.

After plugging all the variables into the Degreeinfo.com super-computer, the results indicated that you will be the first one nominated for the new "Village Elder" category. :D

I'm hardly "retired," Bruce. I'm 42 years old and am working two jobs. (I'm a corporate trainer for AT&T and an adjunct professor in a local MBA program.) I work considerably more that "full-time."

I've just been working in and around this field since I was 19; this board is a natural extension of that. A hobby, if you will.

    Village Elder Rich,

As the charter member of the 1000 Club (An elite club for mega-posters), you deserve the title Village Elder more than I do. Therefore, I gracefully, collegially and with DL diplomacy surrender the title to you.

Perhaps now I can get some rest. When Bruce bestowed the title on me I immediately told my wife---who immediately began telling me I needed to sweep, vacuum and dust the village. Wow, I'm glad that's over! :D

Well, retired in a way. I'm just jealous that you're managing to collect a pension while I'm barely at the halfway point to mine. :(

Goddamn, I love it so. I retired from active duty as a captain when I was 36 and have been collecting all that time. (And damn smug about it. ;)

This is plagiarism, Rich, originally spoken by General Patton in reference to his love for fighting the war-WWII. Such expletives, however, do nothing to further the cause of DL.

    My sermon for the day!

    Tactfully spoken.

Patton was truly an amazing man.

Four words is not plagerism, Russ. It is a quip from a movie, and I'm not even sure if it is verbatim.

As for profanity, I don't subscribe to a creation myth, so for me it is just a commonly used idiom. (Hence the one word spelling.)

I'm sure you're equally diligent and vocal regarding Levicoff's scatalogical and sexual references?

Such pettiness does nothing to further the cause of DL. Stick to the issues. Save the sermon for the sheep.

Me thinks Russell forgot the smiley. Now for Rich's post I am not sure.:)

I’d have to agree with Russell on this one. He tactfully broached the issue without creating offense (to any reasonable academic).
