Those bills are pretty cool. I collect coins and specialize in silver dollars but I keep my eye on the bills. The most interesting thing about bills now is the technology involved in anti-forgery efforts. Very cool stuff.

Every time I travel, I can't help but to think how dull American money looks in comparison to most of the rest of the world. Even countries like Dominican Republic, whose water is undrinkable and whose produce is laced with parasites, has some nice looking money. The only catch is, it costs about 700 Dominican Pesos to eat at a decent restaurant :lmao:

If you like silver dollars I bet you would like the Cinco Peso....I' am a huge coin collector myself.

Question: If the produce is laced with parasites, would you really want to eat there even for 700 Pesos? :yuck:

Some people like to have large collections but I prefer a small one. I will collect a number of pieces and then trade them in for a single, more valuable piece. My collection now consists of only four pieces but the value is relatively high. I know that in some ways I lose value when I make my trades but I enjoy the research. The Bay State Coin Show is coming up again in March so I may try to make a move there. I've been thinking about shifting into commemoratives or foreign equivalents, like Chinese Pandas. Do you have any advice in that area?

700 pesos is what it costs to avoid parasites.

I try to avoid any coins that trade higher their weight in gold or silver. If you’re talking about the Gold Pandas, they are 1oz of gold and trade high around $1,400-1,500 because they have a collective value that increases the coin above spot and commission (3%). If you love the coins (they are beautiful) then drop the $1,500 on them. If you're just buying gold, get some 1 oz rounds instead from a private mint. I would say stick to silver or palladium instead though. Silver will break $100 an oz and last night it closed at $28.XX an oz. So you have a chance to still buy very low and increase your value. All of those 50 gram bars I bought last week for $30 a bar are now listed at $70 a bar. The posted market trade prices takes time to catch up to the real market value which is pushing $38-40 an oz.

This is a good site 1 oz. Gold Bars (Only) for all your silver and gold buying needs. They have ton of coins as well. After saying all that I have to make it clear I do buy coins that have no metal value. I love collecting all types of coins. But I love this market as well. I have about 180oz of silver I bought before the market shot up. I was trying to buy every Cinco Peso sold on Ebay or Amazon to corner the Cinco Peso market. A few years ago when gold was $300 an oz I told my wife we need to buy all the gold our savings would let us, she would never go for it. Now every time I check the Gold and silver index I bring it up. We would have quadrupled our money. Now I am saying the same thing about silver. Gold is just too high for middle class America to buy, that leaves silver as the only option. Buy all the silver coins and bars you can.
Just try to stay away from Ebay!!!!

Amelia Earheart? That's kind of dumb. There are many women much worthier of having their portrait on currency.

Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to do any of that, and while I'm not saying I doubt that metals will continue to go up, I'm always leery of claims that commodities are guaranteed to do anything in particular. Something almost anyone can afford to do, however, and that it might be wise to consider is to save your (pre-1982) pennies, especially since it's fun and easy. Even kids can do it!
