  1. Does DegreeInfo.com need a forward thinking and radical moderator like thomas_jefferson to promote and nurture conversations that the DI elite deem "too controversial"?

I say yes and so should you. In 2011 vote thomas_jefferson for moderator.

I think moderator elections would be a smashing idea.

I voted yes....But in the mod's eyes that might work as a no.

..isn't it up to the owner of the board to pic mods? On my board I gave mod status to the folks I knew AND were trustworthy. While I don't know who picks the mods for this forum, a good job's been done thus far... if it ain't broke, why try and 'fix' it? ..not to mention there are members on this forum who've been around quite a bit longer than you... <shrug> :)

    What's this "I am a moderator/administrator so my vote doesn't count"?

Yes it's up to chip. I doubt Chip will go for it...but its still funny!

  7. It is because I know how you'll likely vote. Few people in positions of power, no matter how lowly the power of a moderator is, want that power challenged. I also made votes public so you don't cheat. ;)

I take offense to such a comment. Now, bow before me, apologize, and kiss my ring  By the way, I voted "my vote does not count" since I wanted to follow your rules (flexing your power already by telling me how to vote - I see how it is).

  9. You value seniority and nepotism. I value democracy and eclecticism. Therefore: You vote no, I vote yes. ;)

I used to run what were called "boards" back when you had to connect to them with a 300 "baud" modem. In those days a moderator was called a "SysOp". If you made the mistake of making the wrong person SysOp they could do the old 'deltree /y C:\' or 'format /y C:' (I think I've got those commands right)... nowadays I think an annually elected board of moderators wouldn't be so dangerous, particularly because an administrator could disarm them quickly. I think the process would really engage people with the forum which could be a net positive.

There are mods that have been around a short period of time compared to others. This "job" is not about time-in-duty,

  11. Hah... Ted Heiks was not so accommodating! If elected, I know what my first order of business will be...

I voted no, but only out of respect for the whole "ownership" thing. If Chip wants to add you, rock on.

The whole idea is intriguing on why being a moderator is even desirable. I am a member of a very popular bodybuilding website that gives out "rep points" where being a moderator there is akin to being anointed because your "rep points" go astronomically high and you actually do yield power to get things done such as favors for repping lowly individuals. For most forums it is simply taking out the trash. I was recently given access to another forums behind the scenes interaction between moderators where one thought that "challenging" moderators was a deadly sin and that they were beyond reproach. I am in the military and many people have this idea about themselves as well. "I am higher ranking than you so what you say doesn't matter and you can't challenge me solely based on that." My point being, we are all humans, and any position of power is about responsibility not forced compliance.

Wait....I thought this was a joke TJ...are you being serious?

  15. Half-joking, I am pretty sure the likes of Ted Heiks is safe from being ousted by the masses. Speaking of Ted, if we disregard his predictable "no" vote, we're at 3-4.

Any of the no's have a reason why there'd be no positive effect from electing mods democratically?

If there was an election, I most likely would not have been voted in to become a moderator, yet look at the fantastic job that I have done!

You seem to have a bit of a misunderstanding of what it means to be a moderator. We have no "power," only a set of responsibilities that we voluntarily take on. We can't decide what to do and when, we simply enforce the terms of service of this forum. If you became a moderador, you would be no different.

If you follow us closely, you will realize that the moderator team is heterogeneous personality-wise. There really is no such thing as a collective opinion of the "DL elite." In fact, if the case were mine to make, I would say that the "elite" are not us, the moderators, but all of you, the loyal members who make this site worth coming to. :You_Rock_Emoticon:
You share experiences and supply information on an endless array of subjects from an endless array of perspectives. I just delete spam :dunno:.

This site isn't about controversy, it is about information sharing. Opinions are encouraged, debates are welcome, fights are not. It really is that simple. :fing02:

Thanks for teaching me a new word. Unfortunately, I was one letter away from being able to use it in the game of Scrabble that I am in the middle of playing :pat:

Whether or not democratically elected moderators would change anything at degreeinfo, that isn't likely to happen any time in the forseeable future. Because of the special nature of the community, the issues the community has to deal with, and the numerous behind-the-scenes issues the mod team also deals with on a daily basis, moderators are selected as needed from among existing members with input from the existing mods and admin staff.
