So my wife got me a home brew kit from The Beaverage People. It's just their basic kit, but I have zero brewing experience so that's alright. One of my buddies is a home brewer (He makes an awesome Wheat Brew w/citrus) and after having some of his, at $35 for approximately 5 gallons, I was interested and wanted to see for myself what I could come up with. . . I just started my first brew attempt, which is now fermenting, and its a simple Wheat Brew. Once I feel I have to basics down, I'd like to make a cone of the BJ Blond Ale or Lost Coast's Great White. :friday:
Geeez, I woudl have thought you would be more interested in wine making (I just started, my first batch of Syrah is in secondary ferment).
I know a farmer who is just finishing up on a large shed that he's going to use for distilling. His plan is to make a limited edition gourmet vodka that he can sell at the local liquor stores. He hopes that it will be a nice supplement to his income. He's approaching it like a hobby-business. It seems that you could go at it in a very basic "moonshine" way but he's all scientific and technical about it. He seems to be having great fun with it, especially the distilling equipment.
You know whats funny, I was born and raised in the Sonoma/ Napa Valley surrounded by wineries, but I can't stand the taste of wine. I just recently developed a broader taste for different types of beer, for the longest time I would only drink Corona, but know I'm starting to try different beers. The brew kit seems like fun, so I'm going to play around with different recipes and try to emulate what I already like and try to improve the recipe and come up with something different.
And of course no hobby is complete without an internet forum. The brewing counterpart to RA vs. NA is batch-sparge vs. fly sparge. Phillip
this video takes a while to get started, it has a little black space at the beginning, but definitely worth watching YouTube - Good Eats S6E7P1: Amber Waves part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA7jQ6Wwnqk&feature=related even if you're not interested in making your own beer, its pretty interesting and educational
