Ok here’s the deal, I work in sales now and I love it. If I keep going at the rate I’m going I will make just at 40K a year. It does not sound like a ton of money but where I live it’s a lot of money. I make a nice base pay and the rest is commission. I just found out I was getting cheated out of some pay, ok a lot of pay, not just some. My co-worker left his commission sheet out on his desk in his office and I looked at it….wrong.. I know but hey it was just sitting there. He has worked there a week or so longer than me but has been in the industry for many years and has worked at our competitor for years before jumping ship. Well I looked at his sheet and he is making about $200-300 more than me on sale. We all make the same base pay and commission, it was on his sheet. It showed that he was making more gross per a deal than I am, so it’s making my commission smaller. It shows my cost for the product higher than his, I doubt it cost more to make my product then it does his……Should I just leave this alone and be happy I have a job? Or should I ask my co-worker about it? I did the math and it’s close to $6,500. That’s a lot of money I’ve lost in the last few months!

If I'm reading this right, they made a better deal with him than they made with you. It happens. If you really are a proven commodity, though, you should be able to renegotiate, especially if you have a periodic review. If nothing else, now you know what they're willing to pay good salespeople.

  3. When this guy was hired he came to the table with more experience so they gave him a better deal than you, a less experienced salesman. That is par for the course. I would not say anything and just keep your nose to the grindstone. If you work hard good things will come in due time.

I agree with the comments above. I hire people all the time and they start at difference salaries. It is based on expereince and what is negotiated going in. If you were happy with $40K before, what others make should not play a part in your happiness. What if you found out he made $25K? Would you be "more happy" or demand a reduction or demand he get an increase?

At the very least you now know you have room to negotiate a raise in the future.
