We could call it the "Match of the Century!" Ladies/Gentlemen, in one corner we have the godfather of distance learning, Dr. John Bear, 6' 2", 210 lbs. In the other corner we have the # 1 opponent of DL, Professor David Noble, 5' 8", 240 lbs. Now I would pay $50 to see this one! Russell
Reminds me of the late Jim Holton, 70's Manchester United player for whom the crowd would chant "Six foot two, eyes of blue, big Jim Holton's after you". (I guess this was a takeoff on the song from the 20's: "Five foot two, eyes of blue, But oh what those five feet can do, Has anybody seen my gal") In any case, the wrestling match I would love to see is Steve Levicoff vs. Sheila Danzig. Now THAT would be a good cat fight.
Perhaps a tag team match would be in order! I would be willing to pay $100 to see this one. Where can I secure those tickets, me again? Russell
If it is a boxing match, our man will certainly win because he is stronger and he has longer "reaches" (longer arms).
RE: Match of the Century-- Bear vs. Noble. I wonder if we could get Noble to agree to a World Wide Web simulcast. I don't think I could get away from job and family long enough to go all the way up to Madison Square Garden. Tracy<><
Pictures of the contenders: http://www.convergemag.com/Publications/CNVGOct99/Bear/InClose.shtm http://www.uupinfo.org/voice/nov/nov00.html (I've never met either, so hopefully these a are the right pictures!)
That's John, but I've never seen him look so stern. He's a pretty affable guy, usually with a smile on his face. Noble doesn't look like he knows how to smile. (His writings reflect the same.) Rich Douglas
No doubt about it, John would be the winner. He has that "look" about him, you know, that look that says, "I'm right, I know I'm right, and I'm gonna let the world know I'm right. I would predict a Round 2 knock out punch: Round 1: Noble--a "critical of DL" uppercut. Bear--"Bears' Guide" jab. Noble--"no good degree" left hook. Bear--"Sosdian Report" blow to the stomach. Noble--"lack of accreditation" swing--misses. Bear--4 "RA DL" blows to the head. DING DING Round 2: Noble comes out swinging, delivers two intimidating arrogant blows to Bear. Bear goes down on one knee. The crowd goes wild. The stadium is in an uproar. The "good-ole-boys-club" stands and yells, DL is finally defeated. Noble makes his move to deliver the knock out blow. But just as he nears Bear, Bear lunges upward, delivers a stunning blow to Noble's stomach, then another, then another. Noble staggers, traditional academe squirms in their seats, then with a massive DL uppercut, Bear delivers a knock-out punch. Noble hits the mat with a thud. The winner is John Bear: the FBI applauds his expertise, some of traditional academe remain critical, however, Bear leaves the building with a loyal following of the faithful, regional accreditation on his side, and a bright future for DL. Gert offers "Pictures of the contenders." Truth be known, I'd prefer the recently taken one, found where my resume resides, at http://circledance.tripod.com/johnbear/
Do only I think this, or does it appear to anyone else that Noble already looks a little dazed from taking too many left hooks? On a similar note, I read the article to which Noble's mugshot was attached. Noble is quoted as saying that he thinks distance education is “the biggest threat ever to institutions and faculty.” So...where does the lowly student fit into Noble's grand master plan?
