  1. It's a little late for this, since the year is well under way, but here are some predictions for 2002:

    2002 Predictions

    1. Steve Levicoff’s new book will appear: “When the Trucks Stop Short: An Evaluation and Critique of the Transnational Highway System.”
    2. John Bear will retire and take a vacation trip to a mysterious location -- this time Gough Island.
    3. MIGS will cease operations, and sell the degree.com domain name to Lacrosse University for $250,000.
    4. Our resident Century University apologist will see the light and start a new PhD program with Central Queensland University.

All tongue-in-cheek, so please don't take offense.

Gert predicts: John Bear will retire and take a vacation trip to a mysterious location -- this time Gough Island.

John replies: Hey, when St. Kitts, the British Virgin Islands, and Norfolk see the light, this may be the last island left for the nonwonderfuls. Rushmore University's Tristan da Cunha Campus, etc.

    2002 predictions-
Rich Douglas completes his ph.d. and is hired by CEU to make MIGS legitimate.
Union Institute University spends thousands hiring a consulting firm to come up with a new name and becomes Union University Unstitute. So the slogan can be, it's all UUU!
NCU attains RA and changes its name to Olympia University. It's slogan becomes O U wonderful students!
A person with a less than wonderful track record finds a connection with a 3rd world country and sets up a new less than wonderful institution. The Yemen Institute of Polytechnical Education Studies (YIPES)!

This being the case, I'm guessing that 2002 will see a revival of the movement (first mentioned on a.e.d. several years ago) to create a national registry (the Bureau of Governmental University Standards) for educational quality assurance, such that any school that didn't meet regional or DETC accreditation would automatically be granted registry with this organization, and would be required to state, prominently on all of their marketing materials,

    "This school has BOGUS accreditation"
