    A charming story.

And at the other end of the age scale, there was a 13-year-old Korean girl whose family came to America for a one-year job assignment. Based on her tests, she was placed in 12th grade in her American high school, which she completed with highest marks -- but was denied graduation, because that school district had a rule that you had to be at least 14 to graduate. By the time she was 14 and back in Korea, it turned out that the district had no provision for retroactive awarding of diplomas, unless you took an exam of some sort. Turned out the exam could only be taken on campus. The girl was unable to apply to universities in Korea without the diploma. Many letters were written and phone calls made. Finally a sensible administrator ignored all the rules, and got a diploma issued. This is one of the many reasons I keep a "Bending the Rules" chapter in Bears' Guide.

I can’t speak to the veracity but this story did circulate while I was a student at the University of Georgia. After the State of Georgia started to offer free drivers licenses for WWII veterans a math professor took his discharge to the local license bureau to request his free renewal. Since it was from the German Army it must have been something other than a DD 214. As the story goes the statute neglected to specify the flag under which one served and the professor received his free license.

Other favorite UGA riffs: 1) Georgia athletes who can do anything with a ball but sign it. 2) Jesus could not have been born in Athens 'cause you can't find three wise men and a virgin.

Let me hasten to add, before some loyal Bulldog offers to skewer me in front of Bubber's Bait Shop, my years in Athens were terrific and one of my favorite expressions is an old Lewis Grizzard title: If I ever get back to Georgia I'm going to nail my feet to the ground. Go you hairy Dawgs!
